DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Nicky Kunz (Hilton Head, S.C.) got the Wildcat men's tennis Fall season underway by competing at the Racket Club Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas, over the weekend.
The duo played in both the singles and doubles draw. A year ago, Schafer teamed with Calum Gee to take home the doubles title. The senior opened this year's invitational with a hard-fought three-setter, falling to Hall Fess of Arkansas by the score of 5-7, 7-6, 6-4. Schafer regrouped with a consolation win, 6-4, 6-4 over a player from Rice. His run ended there when he dropped his next match, an 8-3 decision to McDaniels of New Mexico.
Kunz had a bye into the second round, but fell to Texas' Jacoby Lewis in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. His consolation match was a tightly-contested three-setter, but he fell in the end, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 to a player from New Mexico.
The duo matched up against a pair from Arkansas in the first round of their doubles draw and fell by the score of 9-7.
Davidson next returns to the hard courts, Oct. 5-6, when it hosts the Jim Causey Invitational at the Covington Tennis Courts.
