DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson senior Ryan Hopkins was officially announced Thursday as a NCAA Men's Track & Field East Region Championships qualifier in the 10,000-meter run, which will be run Thursday, May 24 at 9 p.m. at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.
The Greenwich, Conn. native qualified by virtue of his school-record performance at the Penn Relays on April 26 when he finished fifth in 29:49.01. The time ranks him 41st in the field of 48 runners. He will need to place in 12th place or better to advance to the NCAA Finals.
Hopkins is the first Davidson runner to qualify for the NCAA Regionals on time alone. David Ritchie (400-meter hurdles), Douglas Noreen (800-meter run) and Beaux Jones (javelin) were the last Wildcats to compete in the event in 2007. They advanced to the event as automatic qualifiers by virtue of claiming the individual Southern Conference Championships in their respective events. Automatic bids are no longer awarded to conference champions.
Hopkins, who recently received the Tommy Peters Award as Davidson College's top male athlete, won the SoCon Championship in the outdoor 5,000-meter run this season and holds both the 5000m and 10,000m outdoor school records.
