CULLOWHEE, N.C. — Three runners were named to the All-Southern Conference Freshman Team and the Davidson women's track & field team finished up the SoCon Outdoor Championships Sunday on the campus of Western Carolina.
The Wildcats did not score over the weekend, but it was a great experience for the young squad. Freshmen Presley Parkes, Ali Cobb and Erin Osment were each named to the All-Freshman team in the 5000 Meter, while Osment also made it in the 10000 Meter run on Saturday.
Appalachian State took home the team championship on both the men's and women's side, finishing with 238 and 207.50 points, respectively. It was ASU men's third straight title, while it was the women's second in a row.
Despite the windy and cold temperatures, the young Wildcat team with many racing in their first outdoor championships, got valuable experience and did well according the head coach Jen Straub.
Senior Claire Naisby had the Wildcats' best finish on the day with a ninth place showing in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase. It was the senior's first time running the event this year as she wrapped up her final SoCon Championships with a time of 12:21.47.
Freshman Parkes had the Wildcats' top-finish and top-time in the 5000 Meter run when she just missed scoring for Davidson with a 10th place showing. She raced to a time of 18:40.
Parkes was not alone in the event as Cobb, Osment and Lauren Carter each competed as well. Cobb had the next best time after Parkes with a time of 18:50.94 to finish 12th. Osment was next, coming in 16th on a time of 19:12.15 and Carter was 24th, crossing the finish line with a time of 20:40.82.
Senior Jane Gay, racing in her final championships, had a 19th place showing in the 1500 Meter run when she crossed the line at 5:06.85. Maggie Rickard also competed in the event, getting 26th place with a time of 5:20.57.
