Lantz and Hopkins Win SoCon Titles, Wildcats Wrap up Track & Field Championships

CULLOWHEE, N.C. — Andrew Lantz and Ryan Hopkins took home championship titles in the 800 and 5000 Meter runs as the Davidson men's track & field team finished up the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships Sunday on the campus of Western Carolina.
The Wildcats finished fifth with 58 points. They had three runners earn All-SoCon honors with Lantz, Hopkins and Demetrios Pagonis each garner the honor.
Appalachian State took home the team championship on both the men's and women's side, finishing with 238 and 207.50 points, respectively. It was ASU men's third straight title, while it was the women's second in a row.
Despite the windy and cold temperatures, Davidson had a strong final day at the championships. Lantz led the way for the men with a first and third place finish, respectively, in the 800 and 1500 Meter runs. He gave the Wildcats six points in the 1500 Meter run when he crossed the finish line on a time of 3:51.92. The sophomore then followed that up with an outstanding run the 800 Meter when he beat Alex Taylor of ASU by .37 tenths of a second to win the individual championship. Lantz clocked in at a time of 1:54.60 to give Davidson 10 points and earn himself All-SoCon honors, which he also earned in the 1500 by placing third.
Hopkins collected his individual championship in the 5000 Meter run as the senior capped off his final SoCon Championships with a time of 14:44.36. The senior was not alone near the top as Pagonis gave the 'Cats two top-three finishers with a time of 14:54.87 to earn third place and six points. Both runners were also All-SoCon picks for their top finishes.
The Wildcats were well represented in the 5000 Meter as Vincent Weir ran as well when he crossed the finish line in ninth place on a time of 15:30.69.
Sophomore Grayam Sailor-Tynes also raced in the 1500 Meter with Lantz and scored a 16th place finish on a time of 4:04.99.
Davidson's 4x100 Meter Relay team was fifth after clocking in on a time of 44:36. It earned four team points. The 'Cats last relay team, the 4x400, scored the final points of the day with a fourth place finish on a time of 3:23.45 to get five points.
Racing in the 110 Meter Hurdles was sophomore Pierce DeRico and he gave the Wildcats three points with his sixth place finish on a time of 14.98. Davidson had not had a runner in the 110 Meter for quite sometime according the head coach Gary Andrew.
