Mt. PLEASANT, S.C. — In another closely knit contest against Chattanooga, Davidson was unable to repeat its winning touch against the Mocs as the Wildcats came up short in a 4-3 defeat in the first round of the Southern Conference M. Tennis Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

It all came down to the No. 5 singles slot between Robert Lightbourn and Jackson Tresnan with the match tied at three points apiece. Lightbourn fell in the first set, 6-3, but regrouped for a 6-3 win of his own to force the final set. The sophomore battled back from a 5-2 deficit in games, taking three of the next four games in the set to make it 6-5. Tresnan came back in the next game to capture the win and take a 7-5 decision, giving the Mocs (14-8) the team win.

UTC advances to play top-seeded College of Charleston in the second round tomorrow, April 20. Davidson closes out its 2012 campaign at 7-14 overall. The Wildcats fell to 11-13 in the tournament since 1998.

Davidson had defeated the Mocs 4-3 during the regular season, taking four of the six singles matches.

The match on Thursday started out with three close doubles matches, with Chattanooga grabbing the team point after scoring 8-6 and 8-5 wins at No. 2 and 3 slots.

Down 2-0 in the match after falling at No. 6 singles, Davidson worked its way back into the match starting with a strong victory from All-SoCon Freshman Team member Nicky Kunz. The first year player scored his 13th win of the season after a 6-3, 6-0 triumph at No. 3 singles. It was his seventh win at that position in the lineup.

Senior Calum Gee, playing in his final match as a Wildcat, knotted things up at 2-all when he picked up a straight-set 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles. He finished his senior campaign at 9-12, getting eight of those wins at No. 4.

For his career, Gee went 42-41 overall in singles action, getting 23 of those wins vs. the SoCon. He added another 39 wins in doubles action, including reaching the 10-win mark in his final three seasons. He and fellow doubles mate Joe Schafer started the year ranked 19th in the nation, the first time Davidson has ever had a ranked doubles team.

Schafer followed Gee with a three-set triumph at No. 1 to give the 'Cats a 3-2 lead. The junior lost his first set, 6-3, but came back for 6-4 and 6-2 wins in the next two sets in becoming the fourth Davidson player to reach the 10-win mark this season. He closed the year at 10-11.

Chattanooga though tied it back up with a three-set victory at No. 2 singles. Chris Mark won his first set, but could not hang on in the next two, falling 6-2, 6-2 to set up the deciding singles match at No. 5.
