DAVIDSON, N.C. —  The Davidson men's tennis team, playing its final two matches of the regular season at home, had its second straight close contest, but came out on the short end of a 4-3 decision to Wofford on Wednesday afternoon in Southern Conference action at the Covington Tennis Courts.

The Wildcats (7-12, 3-6 SoCon), who had won a 4-3 road decision at Chattanooga back on April 1, was not able to come through in three three-set singles matches allowing Wofford (5-11, 4-5 SoCon) to take the one-point team decision.

Doubles saw three tightly contested matches, with the Wildcats prevailing 8-6 at No. 2, but falling 8-6 at both the top spot and third spot. The No. 2 duo of Nicky Kunz and Chris Mark won their first match together.

Down 1-0, Kunz helped tie things up when the freshman scored a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 singles to run his record to 12-7, 6-3 in SoCon action. It was the first-year's third straight singles win.

Robert Lightbourn gave the 'Cats a 2-1 advantage when he rolled to his personal-best 10th win of the year on a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 5 singles. The sophomore picked up his second straight win and sixth in the last 10 matches.

Scoring the final team point was Connor Evins as he became the third Wildcat to reach the 10-win mark on the season when he tallied a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 6. All 10 of the sophomore's wins have come at No. 6.

Wofford though netted three wins at the No. 1, 2 and 4 spots, all in three sets, to earned the 4-3 win. Joe Schafer took the first set in his singles match at No. 1 with a 7-5 decision, but the fell 6-1, 6-1 in the next two sets. It was the junior's fifth three-set affair of the year.

Mark came back from dropping his first set, 7-5, to roll to a 6-0 win, but the momentum was halted when Drew Superstein picked up a close 6-4 decision in the final set.

Calum Gee played a very close match at No. 4, regrouping after falling 6-4 in the first set for a 7-6 win in the second set. Rob Galloway came back and netted another 6-4 win in the final set to send the Wildcat senior to 7-12 on the season. Gee and three-setters has become a common thing recently, playing five in the past six matches with a 3-2 mark in that stretch.

Davidson closes out its regular season with a 1 p.m. match against College of Charleston, April 15, at home.
