ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Playing its second match in as many days, the Davidson men's tennis team came out on the wrong end of a 5-2 decision on the road against South Carolina State on Thursday afternoon at the SCSU Tennis Courts.

Davidson (4-6) was swept for only the second time in doubles play this year, and then was held to two singles wins in the defeat. It was just the third time both teams had played each other, as SCSU (8-2) now holds a 2-1 lead in the series.

The nationally ranked pair of Joe Schafer and Calum Gee dropped their second match in a row, falling 8-5, while the Bulldogs took 8-3 and 8-5 decisions at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots. The duo of Connor Evins and Chris Mark suffered their first defeat of the season after rattling off seven straight wins in doubles action.

Schafer rebounded to score his sixth singles win of the season with a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 decision at No. 1. The junior tallied his 28th career win.

The Wildcats' other team point came from Evins at No. 6, who scored a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 win to move to 3-2 on the year.

Davidson continues on its six-match road swing by playing Southern Conference-foe Elon on Sunday, March 11, at 1 p.m.
