ELON, N.C. — In its second Southern Conference match of the season, the Davidson men's tennis team fell one point short on the road as the Wildcats fell to Elon by the count of 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Davidson (4-7, 1-1 SoCon) took three of the six singles match, but it came down to the doubles point which Elon (6-6, 3-0 SoCon) captured to start the match. The Phoenix remained perfect in league play at 3-0.
Connor Evins and Chris Mark got back on the winning track after having their seven-match win streak snapped the previous match, but they were the lone Davidson doubles team to score a win on the day. They took home an 8-6 decision at No. 3 doubles to improve to 8-1 on the season.
Nicky Kunz, Calum Gee and Evins each won their singles matches. Kunz continued his solid freshman campaign with his seventh singles win of the season with a 7-6, 3-0 victory at No. 3 after Erin Turner had to retire.
Gee won his second match at No. 4 with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph, while Evins earned a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 win over Carlos Arboleda at No. 6 to run his season mark to 4-2. The overall match had been decided, so Evins and Arboleda played a super tie-breaker, with Evins scoring a 10-5 win.
Davidson continues on the road with a trip to UNCG, March 17, and then hosts The Citadel, March 18, at 1 p.m.
