DAVIDSON, N.C. — Playing its final of a four-match homestand, Davidson was unable to come out on top against Furman as the Wildcats fell 5-2 in men's tennis Southern Conference play on Wednesday afternoon on the Covington Tennis Courts.
Davidson fell to 6-10 overall and saw its league mark drop to 2-4, while Furman improved to 6-12 and 3-2 in SoCon play.
The Paladins were able to sweep all three doubles matches to open the team match, and then went on to capture four of the six singles mathes for the team win.
Scoring the Wildcats two team points were Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) and Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) at No. 3 and 4 singles. Mark tallied his fifth win of the season with a solid 6-0, 6-4 victory.
Gee improved to 6-10, with a 4-2 SoCon mark, when he picked up a three-set winner against Jacob Behal at No. 4. The senior took the first set, 7-6, but fell 5-7 in set two, forcing the final set. He battled and came out on top 6-4 for his second three-set win of the season.
Sophomore Connor Evins (Greenville, S.C.) saw his personal-best win streak of seven in a row come to an end, but he battled to try and keep it alive. The sophomore played a three-setter at No. 6, falling 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 to Tyler Droll as he fell to 8-3 overall and suffered his first league defeat (5-1).
Evin's win streak was the longest since Gee rattled off nine straight during the 2010 campaign.
Davidson takes to the road this weekend for trips to Samford (March 31) and Chattanooga (April 1) as it continues league play.
