DAVIDSON, N.C. — The fourth annual Kicks from 'Cats event, held at Davidson College and benefitting Access to Success programs in Benin City, Nigeria, raised more than $4,200 and 800 pairs of donated shoes through t-shirt sales, fan donations and benefits hosted at local restaurants.
"The gift of providing hope to the children we serve would not be possible without the continuous selflessness of Davidson College and the Davidson community,” former Davidson men's basketball player and A2S President Andrew Lovedale '09 said. “On behalf of A2S and those we serve, I express profound gratitude to those who made this year's Kicks from Cats a success. We are humbled by the opportunity to provide a fighting chance for children in need.”
Davidson College held its annual Kicks from 'Cats event Feb 6, at the men's basketball game. For a fourth straight season, fans donated new or gently-used athletic shoes, purchased event t-shirts and made donations to cover shipping costs. The expanded drive also included school supplies and a competition between the College's SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee).
This year, local restaurants also got involved, as the Brickhouse Tavern, Summit Coffee, FlatIron Kitchen and Taphouse and Brooklyn South Pizzeria all held benefits throughout the weekend to support Access to Success.
All proceeds benefit A2S, the foundation incorporated by Lovedale to support underprivileged youth in his hometown of Benin City, Nigeria, through programs based on faith, sports and education. A2S, who currently supports a free school and hosts basketball camps in Benin City, will its second annual The Andrew Lovedale 5K this fall.
