BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Andrew Lantz successfully defended his 800-meter run title and junior Demetrios Pagonis claimed his first-ever SoCon championship in the 5000-meter run to lead Davidson men's track and field to a fifth-place finish at the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Lantz broke his own school record (1:52.96), set earlier this month, crossing the line in 1:52.18 to just beat out Appalachian State's Alex Taylor by 0.14 seconds. The Houston, Texas native is now undefeated in two attempts at the indoor 800-meter run at the SoCon Championships. He was the first Wildcat to win the event, and is now the first Davidson athlete to successfully defend an individual indoor conference championship, regardless of event.

Pete Ashcraft is the only other Wildcat with multiple individual indoor titles. He won both the one-mile run and two-mile run in 1955.

Pagonis became the first Davidson runner to claim the 5000-meter run at SoCons as he finished in a personal-best 14:22.47 to win by less than seven seconds. Pagonis, who finished third in the 3000-meter run Thursday in a school-record 8:16.27, nearly broke Davidson's 5000m standard of 14:22.35 (0.12 seconds shy) set by senior Ryan Hopkins two weeks ago. The Westminster, Md. native did set a new facility record though.

Hopkins, who finished the 3000m in 8:18.76 Thursday, was fifth in the 5000m Friday in 14:31.80.

The Wildcats' 4x400-meter relay team of senior Lee Dorsey, Lantz, junior Eduardo Vaca and senior Taylor Martin placed fourth in a Davidson all-time top-five best time of 3:24.95.

Freshman Sal del Giudice earned a place on the all-freshman team in the mile run with a time of 4:24.36.

Western Carolina scored 155 points, followed by Appalachian State with 154.5 points, to win the team title. Davidson scored 50 points.

On Thursday, sophomore Stewart Dalton found a place on the podium as he nearly broke the Davidson long jump record of 21 feet, 11 ¾ inches (6.70m). He placed third with a personal-best leap of 21-11 (6.68m).

Davidson's distance medley relay team del Giudice, freshman Wesley Laytham and sophomores Nate Faubion and Will Mitchell placed sixth in 10:22.05 to earn a place on Davidson's top-10 best list.

Sophomore Michael Lorentsen matched his personal best performance in the pole vault of 13-7.25 (4.15m) to place 12th.
