BOSTON/WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.– Senior Ryan Hopkins and junior Demetrios Pagonis continued rewriting the Davidson indoor men's track and field record books Saturday, as both Wildcat runners bested the previous school standards in the 5000-meter run at the Valentine Invitational in the Boston University Track and Tennis Center. Sophomores Andrew Lantz and Grayam Sailor-Tynes broke the school mile record at the JDL Fast Track Invitational hosted by Wake Forest.
Of the 73 runners that competed in the 5000m on BU's banked track, Hopkins placed second overall in 14 minutes, 22.35 seconds and Pagonis was fifth in 14:25.02. Dartmouth's Ethan Shaw was first in 14:16.17.
Pagonis had run the fastest-ever Davidson indoor 5000m just two weeks ago in 14:34.84 at the season opening Niswonger Invitational on East Tennesee State's oversize track. Tom Divinnie set Davidson's regulation-sized (200m) track standard of 14:36.29 at the Southern Conference Championships in 2010 on Clemson's flat track.
Hopkins' previous best in the indoor 5000m was 14:46.89.
The rest of the Davidson men's track and field team competed at the Fast Track Invitational, where Lantz set a new mile record of 4:12.49 to place third. Classmate Sailor-Tynes also bested the previous standard set by Tom Divinnie (4:15.48) in 2010 with a sixth-place finish in 4:14.48.
The Davidson distance medley relay team of Sal del Giudice, Wesley Laytham, Nate Faubion and Will Mitchell turned in a school all-time top-10 best performance of 10:42.04 to win the event.
Senior Taylor Martin led Davidson in the 200-meter dash in 23.23 seconds to earn a place on Davidson's all-time top-10 performers list in the event.
Sophomore Michael Lorentsen placed eighth in the pole vault in 13-5 ¼ (4.10m), while classmate Stewart Dalton led Davidson in the long jump 20-10 (6.35m) and 60-meter dash (7.31).
