DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior linebacker Patrick Moynahan set a new Davidson single-season record for tackles in his final game, but a pair of second-half touchdowns by Joe Ferguson led San Diego to a 17-10 victory over the Wildcats in Pioneer Football League action Saturday at Richardson Stadium.

Davidson finishes the 2012 season with a 2-9 overall record and a 2-6 PFL mark. San Diego (7-3, 6-1 PFL) will seek a share of the league title Saturday, Dec. 1 at Marist.

The Wildcats held a 7-3 halftime lead, but Sam Hoekstra returned the second half-opening kickoff from his own end zone to the Davidson 17, where Richard Klein and Desi Dockery hit him to force a fumble, but David Sperry was able to recover it for the Toreros at the 18-yard line. An offside penalty on the kickoff gave San Diego an extra five yards, and after a two-yard pass play, Ferguson rushed into the end zone from 11 yards out for San Diego's first lead, 10-7.

Robert Schick tied the game for Davidson at 10-10 with 5:49 remaining in the game, but his ensuing kickoff went out-of-bounds to give San Diego the ball at their own 35. A pair of Ferguson rushes moved the ball to the Davidson 48, and a 35-yard pass from Mason Mills to Reggie Bell set up a 13-yard touchdown run for Ferguson on the next play, which proved to be the game-winner.

Ferguson finished the game with 170 yards rushing on 28 carries with two touchdowns, and also caught three passes for 18 yards. Mills threw for 257 yards, completing 17-of-24 attempts with Bell serving as his top target, leading all receivers with seven catches for 168 yards.

Jonathan Carkhuff completed 23-of-37 passing attempts for 250 yards for Davidson, with two interceptions. Danny Martinez was his top target with six catches for 48 yards, while Lanny Funsten led in yardage with 84 yards on five catches.

Moynahan led all tacklers with 11 to set a new school single-season record of 122, surpassing the standard of 117 set by John Dalton in 1993.

“I couldn't be prouder of a bunch of guys,” said interim Davidson head coach Brett Hayford. “I told them they should keep their heads up and they should walk off this field be proud to be a Wildcat, proud to be a Davidson football player and proud to be a Davidson College man. What those 27 seniors did – they led us in tough times, and I couldn't be prouder of what they did. We fought tooth-and-nail to that last whistle.”

The 'Cats' lone touchdown came on their first drive of the game, as Colby Everett punched the ball in from a yard out for his first career touchdown, capping a 13-play, 85-yard drive.

San Diego's first chance to score was denied on the first play of the second quarter, as freshman defensive lineman Andrew Hart blocked a 29-yard field goal attempt and Zach Clark scooped it up and returned it 60 yards to the San Diego 26. The Wildcats were unable to convert though as the Toreros moved the Wildcats backwards and a fake punt attempt failed.

Ernie Collins converted a 22-yard field goal with 8:03 remaining in the half to make it a 7-3 game, and neither team scored for the remainder of the half.

After taking a 10-7 lead at the start of the second half, the Toreros had a chance to extend their lead when they drove to Davidson's 3-yard line on their next possession, but Mills fumbled the snap and Davidson's Matt Casey pounced on it to end the threat.

On the ensuing drive, the 'Cats faced 3rd-and-4 on their own 30, but Carkhuff went deep to Funsten, where the talented receiver hauled in a 54-yard reception that bounced off of defensive back Ryan Costa, who was flagged for pass interference on the play. A completion to Will Morris moved the ball to the USD 10, but Carkhuff was picked off by Costa in the end zone on the next play with 5:25 remaining in the third quarter.

Schick's game-tying field goal with 5:49 remaining capped a 12-play, 57-yard Davidson drive. The Toreros quick touchdown strike gave Davidson the ball back with 3:56 remaining, but the 'Cats went three-and-out. San Diego took over on downs with 2:29 remaining, and a pair of Ferguson rushes and a pair of kneel-downs sealed the victory.

Notes: Lanny Funsten finished his Davidson career with 229 receptions for 2770 yards and 20 reception touchdowns – all school records … Jonathan Carkhuff moved his school all-time completions record to 855 … Davidson went winless at home, facing four of the top five teams in the league at Richardson Stadium.
