DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomore Ian Solcz battled to a 4-3 decision at 174 pounds to earn Davidson's lone victory in a 40-3 loss to No. 5 Ohio State in non-conference wrestling action in front of a record 1,107 fans Thursday night in Belk Arena.
Solcz rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Ohio State's (1-0) Matt O'Hara with a second-period takedown and a third-period escape after starting the period on the bottom to give Davidson (3-1) its only victory.
Nationally-ranked Nikko Triggas and defending national champion Logan Stieber opened the match with convincing victories for the Buckeyes at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively, as Triggas won by fall in 1 minute, 56 seconds, and Stieber piled up back points to earn a 17-1 technical fall victory in 3:34. Randy Languis (141 pounds) then gave Ohio State a 17-0 lead with the quickest pin of the night in 55 seconds.
Davidson sophomore Kevin Birmingham went to the wire with Alex Gordan at 149 pounds, yielding an 8-7 decision. Freshman Nathaniel Powers battled hard at 157 pounds for the Wildcats, but yielded a 9-3 decision to Josh Demas.
Ohio State's Mark Martin won by major decision at 165 for a 27-0 Ohio State lead before Solcz put the Wildcats on the board at 174. Junior Scott Patick dropped an 8-4 decision at 184 and Cody Magrum (197 pounds) and No. 19 Peter Capone (heavyweight) both earned bonus points in their victories for the final margin.
Davidson will hit the road for its next seven matches, next competing in a tri-meet at Sacred Heart Saturday, Dec. 1.
