Davidson Competes at Wake Forest Invite Over Weekend

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team sent eight Wildcats this past weekend to the Wake Forest Invitaitonal, Friday-Sunday, Oct. 5-7, for their third Fall event.
All eight 'Cats competed in both singles and doubles action against competition from West Virginia, College of Charleston, UNCG, Stetson, East Tennessee State, Wake Forest, Charlotte, Navy, Elon, Richmond, Campbell and Appalachian State.
Brite Moniz-Soares (Angra Do Heroismo, Portugal) and Elaina Cummer (Plano, Texas) each picked up singles wins in their first day. Moniz-Soares competed in the A singles draw, scoring a 6-4, 6-4 triumph vs. Charlotte after dropping her first two matches.
Cummer came back from dropping her first set, 1-6, to score 6-1, 6-3 wins vs. Radford in her final B singles draw match. The freshman also teamed up with Moniz-Soares in the A doubles draw and the duo earned an 8-4 win to reach the consolation semifinals before falling 8-3.
Elise Held (Butler, Pa.) closed out her weekend with a 7-6, 6-3 win in the C singles draw. Juniors Frizzi Bschorer (Barnin, Germany) and Tamara Hill (Chapel Hill, N.C.) each scored wins in their final matches. Bschorer, in the D singles draw netted a 6-3, 6-4 win vs. Radford, while Hill, in the F singles draw, had a 6-0, 6-2 victory in her first consolation match.
The junior pair teamed up in the C doubles bracket, but were defeated in both their matches.
Blake Nickles and Courtney McCray were in the E and F singles draw, respectively. Nickles earned a win in her final match, a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Radford, while McCray cruised to a 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 triumph in her opening match vs. Navy, but fell in the quarterfinals. She regrouped to net a 7-5, 6-1 victory against SoCon-foe Elon in her consoldation match.
The sophomore and freshman teamed up in the D doubles draw and dropped all three matches, including a tough 9-7 decision to App. State on the consolation side.
Nisha Crouser and Held represented Davidson in the B doubles draw and after dropping back-to-back matches, scored an 8-6 decision vs. Navy. Crouser competed in the B singles bracket with Cummer, but dropped all three of her singles matches.
Davidson takes a week off before returning Oct. 18 back to Winston-Salem to play in the ITA Regionals, hosted by Wake Forest.
