‘Cats Finish Fall Season with Four Singles Titles at Davidson Invitational II

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Four Wildcats capped off their Fall tennis season by winning their respective singles flights and the Davidson women's tennis team closed out their Fall season by hosting the Davidson Invitational II, Friday and Saturday, at the Covington Tennis Courts.
Earning singles titles were Brites Moniz-Soares at Flight 1, Nisha Crouser at Flight 3, Catherine Wood at Flight 6 and Tamara Hill at Flight 7. Frizzi Bschorer and Hill teamed up to win the Flight 4 doubles with a solid 8-1 victory.
Moniz-Soares went 3-0, taking straight set wins in all three of her matches. She scored a 6-4, 7-5 win vs. USC-Upstate to start the weekend, then rolled to 6-3, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-1 wins vs. Elon and UNC Asheville to win the No. 1 singles flight.
At the Flight 3 spot, Crouser matched her classmate with a 3-0 record as she opened the invitational giving up just four games in a 6-2, 6-2 triumph vs. USC-Upstate. The junior then scored a 6-4, 6-4 victory over SoCon-foe Elon and ended the weekend with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Amryn Soldier of UNC Asheville.
Wood and Hill each went 2-0 to win their respectively flights. Wood opened with a super-tiebreaker 10-7 win after splitting her first two sets vs. Julie Bell of USC-Upstate, 3-6, 6-4. She then cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win vs. UNC Asheville.
Hill dominated in her two matches, opening with a 6-4, 6-2 win and then scoring a 6-0, 6-3 triumph vs. UNCA. It was Hill's second singles title of the Fall season.
Freshman Laina Cummer and Elise Held tallied a pair of wins in their singles flights. Cummer, who won her first singles title to open the Fall season, started with a 7-5, 6-0 defeat, but regrouped to net 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-1 wins in her final two matches of the weekend.
Held fell 6-3, 6-2 to USC-Upstate on Friday, but came out Saturday and captured a pair of wins vs. her Elon and UNCA opponents. She earned a 6-4, 6-2 win vs. Taylor Casey of the Phoenix and then won a 6-4, 6-3 decision over the Bulldogs.
Competing in Flight 5 singles was Blake Nickles. She tallied a pair of wins, defeating Caroline Baker of Elon, 6-2, 6-1 and then taking home a 10-6 super-tiebreaker victory vs. Jill Lewis of Asheville after winning the first set, 7-6, but falling in the second, 6-3.
In doubles action, Stephani Synn teamed with Crouser in Flight 2 to earn an 8-3 decision vs. UNC Asheville. Moniz-Soares and Cummer played in the Flight 1 doubles and registered 8-1 and 8-2 wins in their two matches. Held and Hill also netted a win, taking home an 8-4 decision vs. the Spartans in Flight 3.
