DAVIDSON, N.C. – Five different Wildcats each recorded a pair of first-place finishes as both the men's and women's swimming & diving teams downed the College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon at Cannon Natatorium. The men's squad posted a 163.5-130.5 victory over the Cougars, while the women earned a 152-148 win.
Meredith Nakano, Drew Onken, Spencer Gill, Kaliya Burton-Akright and Dylan Ludwick combined to win 11 events on the day, as each took home two victories.
Ludwick started things off with a win in the 1000-yard free, touching in 9:53.95 just ahead of teammate Max Schimanski who took second in a time of 9:54.88. Ludwick later won the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 4:43.98 to out-touch Ben Stewart-Bates, who was the runner-up in 4:49.10
In the 200-yard freestyle, Onken came away the winner in a time of 1:42.53. He would also take the 200-yard backstroke, touching the pads in 1:54.80 to earn the win. On the women's side, freshman Lauren Malachowski took home top honors in the 200-yard free, swimming a time of 1:56.79.
Onken later added a win the 200-yard IM, finishing in 1:56.00.
Nakano won both breaststroke events, touching in 1:06.80 in the 100-yard event. She then swam a 2:26.31 in the 200-yard breaststroke and also finished first in the 100-yard butterfly with a 57.60. Gill matched her feat for the men's side, winning the 200-yard breaststroke with a mark of 2:10.77. He also took the 100-yard breaststroke in 59.51 as the 'Cats went one-two-three in the event. Grant Smith was second in 1:00.29 and Drew Gill took third in a time of 1:01.28.
Burton-Akright claimed both diving events, winning the 1-meter diving a score of 269.17. She was followed by Karen Monuszko, who scored 219.17 points to finish in second place. The duo also picked up first and second in the 3-meter contest, with Burton-Akright recording 259.73 points and Monuszko posting 215.25 points.
Also taking top honors was Wills Cooper, who won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 21.33. Brandon Kegley claimed the win in the 100-yard free, swimming a 47.76. Will Fox clocked in at 51.50 in the 100-yard fly to earn the win in that event, while Liz Mace was the runner-up to Nakano in the women's event in a time of 58.78. Emily Covert took third in 1:00.22 as the 'Cats claimed the top three spots.
Three Wildcat relays would pick up wins on the day, starting with both 400-yard medley relays. Nakano, Malachowski, Mace and Jean DeOrnellas took the women's event with a time of 3:56.32, while Luke Burton, Onken, Fox and Kegley swam a 3:27.47 to win the men's event.
Kegley and Cooper went on to join Cameron Bard and Quinn Waggoner to claim first in the 200-yard free relay. They quartet touched the wall in a time of 1:25.45 for the win.
The Wildcats will host VMI in a pair of dual meets on Nov. 10. The 'Cats and the Keydets will square off at 1 p.m. in Cannon Natatorium.
