Davidson Swims Past VMI in a Pair of Dual Meets

DAVIDSON, N.C – The Davidson men's and women's swimming teams made it two straight victories in a row, sweeping past Virginia Military Institute with the scores of 164-118 for the Wildcat men and 150-71 on the women's side Saturday afternoon at the Cannon Natatorium.
Both teams ran their record to 2-1 on the young season.
The Wildcats took both the 200-yard medley relays for the early lead, starting with the women's quartet of Kelsi Hobbs, Caroline Vrana, Liz Mace and Jena DeOrnellas who clocked in at 1:51.03 for the win. The men's side followed that up with a win as well, as Ethan Levinson, Spencer Gill, Thomas Bigham and Quinn Waggoner combined for a time of 1:38.69.
Grant Smith took the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:00.52.
The women's team took first through fourth in the 200-yard freestyle, led by Meredith Nakano in first with a 1:57.70. Alliston Cottle was a close second in 1:58.92, followed by DeOrnellas at 1:59.10.
DeOrnellas had the Wildcat women's top time in the 100-yard fly as she touched the pads at 58.58. For the men, Brandon Kegley registered the top time at 54:30. He also clocked in at a time of 2:02.13 in the 200 IM.
Nakano and Will Fox scored a pair of firsts in the 200-yard fly, with Nakano swimming to a time of 2:08.67 and Fox tallying the top time for the men at 1:56.72. Nakano also had a time of 2:25.84 in the 200-yard breaststroke for the time Wildcat time.
Freshmen both took the 50-yard freestyle. Angie Healy claimed the women's event in 25.44, while Cameron Bard did the same in the men's race in a time of 22.21. Benjamin Stewart-Bates was a close second behind Bard on the men's side with a time of 22.40.
Healy then tied with fellow rookie Emma Tobey in the 200-yard backstroke, as both touched in 2:14.57. Levinson was the men's winner with a mark of 1:56.88.
Dylan Ludwick had a top Wildcat times in the 200 IM. He touched the pads at 1:58.08. Drew Onken had the best time for Davidson in the 500-yard free with a time of 4:43.17.
In the diving events, Kaliya Burton-Akright scored 242.40 points in the 3-meter dive to pace the Wildcat women and take home first place. She was second in the 1-meter dive with 232.72 points.
Kieran Lenahan scored 117 points in the 1-meter dive for the men for their best score.
Davidson takes a few weeks off before both teams head to Gambier, Ohio for the Kenyon Invitational, Nov. 29-Dec. 1.
