The Game
• After a strong performance vs. Jacksonville last Saturday, Davidson will look to build off the momentum and earn its first win of the season Saturday night at Campbell, with kickoff set for 6 p.m.
• Davidson's passing offense (280.0 YPG, 11th in FCS, 3rd in PFL) is coming off its best performance of the season after gaining 404 yards against Jacksonville's then-FCS-leading pass defense, which had yielded just 127.17 YPG entering the game. Campbell's pass defense has given up 262.0 yards per game in the air, to rank ninth in the PFL?and 107th in the country.
• The game is the first of three road games in the next four weeks for the Wildcats.
• LB Patrick Moynahan is tied for 14th in the NCAA FCS and leads the PFL with 1.50 tackles for loss per game, and he ranks 15th nationally and second in the PFL with 10.80 tackles per game.
• Senior WR Lanny Funsten was recognized as a Preseason All-PFL honoree in addition to preseason FCS All-American honors by College Sporting News, The Sports Network and BeyondSportsCollegeNetwork.com. He became Davidson's all-time career leader in receptions and receiving yards with a PFL-record 17 receptions vs. Jacksonville (10/13), and is also the reigning PFL?Offensive Player of the Week.
• Both teams are 0-3 in PFL games. Campbell's only win this season came against Virginia-Wise (NAIA).
• The 'Cats were picked ninth in the PFL preseason poll while Campbell was picked fifth.
Series Record
• Davidson leads the all-time series, which began in 2008, 3-1.
• Davidson is undefeated at Campbell (2-0).
• Campbell quarterback Braden Smith scored on a 5-yard touchdown run in triple overtime, and Steth Monroe intercepted a pass on Davidson's possession to hold the Wildcats and lift Campbell to a 26-20 win at Richardson Stadium last season.
• Chris Gorman led Davidson with 151 rushing yards and a touchdown on 27 carries, while Jonathan Carkhuff threw for 290 yards and a score. Lanny Funsten caught nine passes for 87 yards, and Jonathan Adams had nine receptions for 78 markers.
• Smith passed for 290 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 25 yards and the game-winning touchdown to lead Campbell. Harrison Jordan caught four passes for 107 yards and a touchdown, and Paul Constantine caught four passes for 91 yards.
• After both teams had to settle for field goals in the first overtime, Davidson got the ball first in the second session and drove down to the Campbell 12. Facing 4th-and-inches, Milton Brown tackled Gorman for no gain, giving the ball to Campbell.
• The Camels ran three straight times to set up a 35-yard field goal try for kicker Adam Willets, but the senior missed wide left to send the game to triple overtime.
• Kurt Odom picked up 10 yards on the ground in the third session, and facing 3rd-and-goal from the 5-yard line, Smith ran in on a quarterback draw. Davidson linebacker Gianni Ricci picked off a Smith pass on the conversion try as the Camels had to go for two by rule.
• On their possession, the Wildcats fell behind the chains after being flagged for a holding penalty. On 3rd-and-17, Monroe stepped in front of a Carkhuff pass intended for Funsten to seal the win.
Last Time Out
• Lanny Funsten caught a Pioneer Football League record 17 passes, totaling 246 yards, and also broke Davidson's all-time reception and receiving yardage records in a 34-24 loss to Jacksonville in conference action last Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
• Funsten now has 191 career receptions and 2,362 career yards receiving. He broke the career reception record of 179 that had stood for 42 years and was previously held by Mike Mikolayunas (1968-70), and the career receiving yard record of 2,220 that was held by Ryan Hubbard (2004-07).
• Funsten's 17 receptions in the game tied a school record, and his 246 yards was just two yards shy of the school-mark.
• Jonathan Carkhuff set multiple season highs, completing 34-of-53 pass attempts for 404 yards and three touchdowns. His 400-plus yard performance was just the sixth in Wildcats history. He was also intercepted once and sacked five times.
• Patrick Moynahan led all defenders with 13 tackles.
• Jacksonville was led by quarterback Kade Bell, who completed 23-of-36 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns and wide receiver D'Andre Randle, who caught six passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Eric Baker gained 115 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries.
• Davidson was the first to score in the game as Funsten's 12-yard touchdown reception to cap a 15-play, 81-yard drive with 3:35 remaining in the first quarter gave Davidson a 7-0 lead, but Jacksonville quickly responded and outscored Davidson 24-3 for a 24-10 lead at halftime. Carkhuff threw two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, but Jacksonville was able to maintain a double-digit lead throughout the game.
• A 24-yard Dylan Lynch FG for JU was the only scoring in the third quarter, and it gave JU its largest lead of the game at 27-10 with 9:41 remaining in the period.
• Carkhuff completed a seven-yard pass to Reese Williams, who tapped his toe inbounds to complete a spectacular catch, for a touchdown with 6:25 to go.
• JU was able to restore its 17-point lead though when Eric Baker rushed nine yards for a touchdown to cap a 13-play, 68-yard drive.
The 'Cats answered on their next possession as Carkhuff found Garrett Diehl in the end zone to pull the 'Cats back within 10 at 34-24 with 3:29 to go.
• Zach Clark forced a JU fumble with 2:11 remaining, and he recovered it to give the 'Cats one more chance but Jacksonville was able to stop Davidson on downs and seal the victory.
Leftovers from Campbell
• Chazzo Habliston appeared to have set a new Davidson punting record with a 73-yard boot that rolled into the end zone in the third quarter, but it was called back on a holding penalty. Habliston followed with a 53-yard punt that was returned for just three yards.
• Entering the game, Jacksonville led the nation only allowing 129.3 yards per game
• After entering the game scoring on just four of 11 red zone opportunities, the 'Cats converted four of five attempts in the game.
