DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis doubles duo of Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) and Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) became the program's first doubles team in its history to be ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as they were ranked 19th in the first doubles rankings of the year.
The pair were also ranked in the Carolina Regionals where they are fifth, just behind the top doubles team from Elon. They are the highest ranked team in the national rankings out of the Carolina Regionals, ahead of ACC doubles teams from Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest and Clemson.
This past Fall, Gee and Schafer had an outstanding run. They opened the Fall season at the Racquet Clube Collegiate Invitational in Midland, Texas, and proceeded to take home the doubles title. Schafer and Gee started their weekend off with an 8-6 win over a pair from the host school Texas Christian. The Wildcat duo then upset the second-seeded and 18th ranked doubles team in the country from New Mexico to reach the finals. They returned to the courts on the final day and continued their winning ways with a strong 8-6 win to earn their first doubles title of the Fall season.
At the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens, Ga., Gee and Schafer reached the round of 16 with an 8-2 win over a pair from LSU. There run came to an end as host Georgia picked up an 8-3 victory over the Wildcat duo.
Then the pair took home the No. 1 doubles flight at the Jeff Frank Invitational, scoring wins over Campbell and Appalachian State for their second doubles title of the Fall.
The senior and junior had another strong showing at the ITA Carolina Regionals. After reaching the round of 16 in the Fall of 2010, Gee and Schafer matched that this past Fall. They received a first-round bye into the round of 32 and then picked up an 8-6 win to reach the round of 16. Their weekend was halted there though when they suffered a 8-3 defeat.
The Wildcats top doubles team a year ago, the duo went 10-11 at the No. 1 spot, getting half of their wins against league opponents. Gee and Schafer have each once been named to the All-Southern Conference Second Team in singles.
Davidson gets its Spring season rolling with a trip to Blacksburg, Va., Jan. 20, where it will play in the Virginia Tech tour. The Wildcats open their home slate against Gardner-Webb on Jan. 28.
