Pagonis Breaks Davidson’s 5000m Record at Niswonger Invitational

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Junior Demetrios Pagonis opened the Davidson men's track and field indoor season with a school record-breaking performance in the 5000-meter run, as the Wildcats competed in the Niswonger Invitational hosted by East Tennessee State University in the Memorial Center Friday and Saturday.
 
Pagonis placed second in the 5000m in 14 minutes, 34.84 seconds to top the previous Davidson standard of 14:36.29 set by Tom Divinnie at the Southern Conference Championships in 2010.
 
Senior Ryan Hopkins neared his personal best in the event, turning in a Davidson all-time top-10 performance of 14:48.37 to place behind Pagonis in third. Junior Vincent Weir earned a place on Davidson's all-time top-10 performers list in the 5000m, placing eighth in 15:07.81.
 
Sophomore Andrew Lantz won the University/College section of the mile run in a personal–best 4:17.36. The performance ranks in the top five in Wildcat history in the event. Classmate Grayam Sailor-Tynes placed third in the same event in 4:24.13 and Will Mitchell was fifth in 4:28.55.
 
Lantz also led Davidson in the 800-meter run placing third in 1:59.03.
 
Sophomore Michael Lorentsen earned a place in the Wildcats' top-10 performance list in the pole vault after clearing 13 feet, 7 ¼ inches (4.15m). Freshman Tim Hines led Davidson in the long jump with a leap of 20-2 ½ (6.16m).
 
On the first day of competition Friday, senior Lee Dorsey completed the 60-meter dash in 7.35 seconds, and senior
Taylor Martin led Davidson in the 200-meter dash in 23.62 seconds and in the 400-meter dash in 52.27 seconds.
 
Davidson will next compete at the Kent Taylor Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina on Saturday.
