ATHENS, Ga. — Davidson men's tennis players Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) and Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) had an excellent run during the weekend as Gee won the Division III singles title and Mark reached the quarterfinals of his respective singles draw at the 44th annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships held on the campus of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
It's the second weekend in a row a Wildcat has captured a title in either singles or doubles. For Gee, its his second title of the Fall season as he and Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) won their respective doubles draw last weekend at the Midlands Tournament in Texas.
Gee's outstanding weekend started on Friday when he picked up a pair of wins. He started the Division III draw with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Will Rollinson of N.C. State and then advanced to quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-3 victory against a player from Minnesota. His strong play continued with a trip to the semifinals on Saturday after taking home a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 victory against Suresh Eswaran of Vanderbilt. Sunday saw the winning continue all the way to the finals for the senior as he advanced to the final match after a straight set, 6-4, 6-4, win over his second opponent from Minnesota, Juan Pablo Ramirez.
Gee matched up against Stuart Tierney from Lipscomb in the finals and it was all Gee. An All-SoCon Second Team member two years ago, Gee capped off his weekend with an excellent 6-4, 6-4 triumph to earn the title.
Mark's weekend started off with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Eduardo Segura of Georgia Tech in the Division II singles bracket. He then advanced to the round of 16 on Saturday with another straight set, 7-6, 6-3, triumph over an opponent from Kentucky. The junior secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sean Weber of N.C. State. The weekend would end there for Mark though, as another opponent from Kentucky downed him in a straight set, 6-2, 6-2, match halting his chance of reaching the semis in the DII draw.
Also representing the Wildcats over the weekend was Schafer, who played in the Division I singles bracket. He faced the No. 2 seed in the draw, Will Spencer of Georgia, and fell 6-3, 6-1.
Davidson had one doubles team compete over the weekend, with the pair Gee and Schafer playing in the Division I draw. After a first round bye, the duo breezed to an 8-2 win over a doubles team from LSU. Reaching the round of 16 was as far as the Wildcat pair would get because a team from host Georgia halted their run with an 8-3 win.
Davidson hosts the first of two Fall invitationals when it returns home for the Jeff Frank Invitational, Sept. 30- Oct. 1.
