Wildcat Women’s Tennis Has Solid Fall Season Opening

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Sophomore Brites Moniz-Soares (Angra Do Heroismo, Portugal) led a solid showing for the Davidson women's tennis team over the weekend as the Wildcats opened their 2011 Fall season at the Davidson Fall Classic I this past Friday and Saturday at the Covington Tennis Courts.
Moniz-Soares led a group of seven Wildcat players by winning the Flight 3 singles bracket, finishing a perfect 3-0. She scored a 6-3, 6-2 win over UNCG, then scored a hard-fought 7-6, 7-5 victory over Bo Nikolova of East Carolina. The sophomore closed out the flight with a straight set 6-4, 6-1 win against Dana Gray of ECU.
Nisha Crouser (Columbus, Ohio) finished second in the Flight 2 singles bracket, getting a pair of straight set wins (6-3, 6-4 and 7-6, 6-2) over players from Campbell and ECU.
Katharine Dicconson (Pacific Grove, Calif.), Catherine Wood (Greensboro, N.C.) and Frizzi Bschorer (Barnin, Germany) each competed in Flights 4-6, respectively. They also each competed in the doubles flights with each of them picking up a win. Dicconson teamed with Moniz-Soares in the Flight 2 doubles and they scored an 8-4 triumph over a pair from Campbell.
Wood and freshman Blake Nickles (Anderson, S.C.) netted an 8-6 win at the Flight 3 doubles spot against Campbell. Nickles was making her collegiate debut and also competed in the Flight 7 singles bracket.
Also picking up a win in doubles action was Bschorer in the Flight 4 doubles, scoring an 8-4 victory over a pair from ECU.
Rounding out the Wildcats lineup on the weekend was No. 1 singles player Stephani Synn (Conover, N.C.). The senior finished out the weekend with a strong win against some of the top Flight singles players, earning a 6-1, 6-1 triumph vs. Danielle Terpko of East Carolina.
Davidson returns to the courts when it heads to Charleston, S.C., and plays in the College of Charleston Invitational this weekend, Sept. 16-18.
