DAVIDSON, N.C. — Looking to give their four seniors a winning ending in their last regular season game before the National Lacrosse Tournament starts next week, Davidson ran into a tough American University squad as the Eagles picked up a 23-5 win over the Wildcats to spoil their Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium in a non-conference women's lacrosse game.
It marked the final regular-season home game for seniors Lily Graham, Lauren Vanhusen, Stella Davis and Taylor Ketcham, but they will get to carry on their season at home as Davidson (5-11) hosts the NLC Tournament next weekend, Apr. 29-May 1. The 'Cats finished 4-3 in league play, and await their seed and opponent next week.
It was all American (9-7) though on this day as six different Eagles scored during the first six minutes of the game and opened up a 7-0 lead after Kimberly Collins scored her second goal with 23:21 on the clock. The lead would grow to as many as 18 for the final score of 23-5.
Collins was one of seven Eagles to have a multiple goal afternoon. Samantha Marshall came off the bench to net a game-best five goals, while Collins, Chiara Speziale and Bernadette Maher each tossed in three goals.
Lisa Schaaf had a game-high six points on four assists and two goals, and the Eagles as a team picked up 10 assists in all.
The 'Cats were led by the freshmen duo of Ann Fucigna and Paige Logan with two scores each. Fucigna pushed her team-best goal total to 44 on the year and has now recorded at least two goals in eight straight games. The freshman is just five goals away from matching the single-season record set last year by Jen Crawford at 49.
Logan scored the two of the Wildcats three goals in the last 11 minutes of the half to bring Davidson within nine, 13-4, before halftime. She has 19 goals on the year, good for fourth on the team.
Junior Erin Keitel had the other Davidson goal, her 24th of the season, and added her seventh assist on Fucigna's goal with 10 seconds remaining in the first half. Keitel had a breakaway, racing down the field and just before reaching the circle, dished it off to a wide-open Fucigna, who converted.
Keitel added three groundballs, two draw controls, and forced two turnovers, while going 1-for-1 on free-position shots.
Alanna Parker saw her consecutive goal streak come to an end as she failed to score for the first time in 22 straight games.
Jessica Melby, who was busy in goal on the afternoon, came up with eight stops.
Senior Davis was the lone senior to put her name in the statistic categories on the score sheet, picking up a groundball and hauling in two of the Wildcats' 10 draw controls.
The 'Cats will now gear up for the NLC Tournament, which they are hosting, Apr. 29-May 1.
