DAVIDSON, N.C. —
Morgan Derner scored five goals and recorded a pair of assists to lead No. 1-seeded Jacksonville to a 19-7 win over the No. 4 Davidson Wildcats in the semifinals of the National Lacrosse Conference tournament Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.

Jacksonville (14-4) advances to tomorrow's 1 p.m. championship game to face the winner of the second semifinal between No. 2 High Point and No. 3 Longwood. Davidson finishes the season with a 6-12 overall record.

Nikki Erdely scored four goals for Jacksonville, which outshot Davidson 34-17 and finished with a 21-10 edge in ground balls.

Davidson was led by Ann Fucigna and Erin Doherty, each with three goals. Fucigna, who also had an assist, finished the season with 49 goals, tying a Davidson single-season record. Her 60 points are the third most in Davidson single-season history. The Wildcats won the draw control battle, 13-10.

After getting down 2-0 to start the game, Davidson scored three straight to take a 3-2 lead as Jenna Mugele fed Doherty with 20:17 left in the first half. But Jacksonville rattled off 14 unanswered goals, and against the tournament's top seed, the 'Cats couldn't dig out of the hole.

Davidson's Jessica Melby recorded a career-high 16 saves in net. Jacksonville's Karli Tobin finished with five saves. The Dolphin defense had 15 caused turnovers, led by three each from Kaitlin Stewart and Ellyn Spangenberg.

Derner took the opening draw control downfield and scored to give Jacksonville a 1-0 lead, and Stewart put the Dolphins ahead 2-0 just four minutes later.

Fucigna answered twenty seconds later to put the 'Cats within a goal, and Paige Logan knotted the game with 20:50 left in the first half on a free position shot. Mugele hit Doherty at the top of the circle to give Davidson a 3-2 lead with 20:17 left to play in the first. The Wildcats had three offensive possessions to add to their lead, but could not stretch the margin.

Jacksonville, though, reeled off eight unanswered goals to take a 10-3 lead into the halftime break, as Derner scored a pair and assisted on a pair scored by Erdely. Two tallies during the stretch came in the final 11 seconds of the first half. The Dolphins carried their scoring streak in the second half, tallying 14 unanswered goals until Fucigna hooked up with Doherty with 18:31 left to play.

Doherty's goal halted down the Dolphin attack, and the teams traded goals the rest of the way with Jacksonville taking a 5-4 advantage, but the deficit proved too great. Doherty scored her third of the day, unassisted with 14:24 remaining, and Fucigna put away a pass from Erin Keitel with 9:10 to go. Fucigna scored her third and the team's final goal of the game on a free position shot with 1:44 to play.

Senior defender Lily Graham and sophomore goalie Jessica Melby were both named to the NLC All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the weekend. High Point defeated Jacksonville in overtime in the tournament final, 13-12.

Game Notes: Davidson fell to 3-2 all-time in the NLC Tournament… The 'Cats are now 1-2 all-time against Jacksonville… Davidson returns its top seven scorers to next year's team.
