CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A day after upsetting seventh-seeded Wofford, Davidson was seeking to take down second-seeded College of Charleston, but the Cougars grabbed the doubles point and went on to earn three more wins in singles action for the 4-0 victory over the Wildcats in the second-round of the Southern Conference Men's Tennis Tournament at the Champions Club.
The 'Cats conclude their 2011 season at 7-18, while CofC moves to 16-5 and will face Furman in the semifinals tomorrow, Apr. 22.
For only the second time in the last 12 matches, Davidson dropped the doubles point after seeing the Cougars taking wins at No. 1 and 2 for the early 1-0 team lead.
The pair of Kevin Moore (Overland Park, Kan.) and Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) won at No. 3 doubles to give Davidson a chance, but CofC took the point with a win at No. 2. Moore and Mark closed the season at 9-8 with an 8-2 win, earning victories in their last three straight matches.
CofC took the match then with singles wins at No. 2, 3 and 4.
Playing in their final matches as Wildcats were Arie Hefter (Birmingham, Ala.) and Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.). Hefter dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision at No. 3 singles as the senior finished with 18 career singles wins.
Lyons went to a third set at No. 5 singles, winning the first set 6-2 before Kyle Parker tied things up with a 6-3 win in second set. The third set went down to a tie-breaker, but did not finish as the overall team match had been decided. Lyons closed out his Wildcat career with 37 singles wins and added another 38 in doubles matches.
Carter Braxton (Charlotte, N.C.) was also part of the 2011 senior class, and totaled a pair of singles wins and five doubles win throughout his Wildcat career.
