CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) led the 10th-seeded Davidson men's tennis team into the second round of the Southern Conference Men's Tennis Tournament with perfect afternoons as the Wildcats picked up a 4-1 win over seventh-seeded Wofford on Wednesday afternoon at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The 'Cats (7-17) will now face second-seeded College of Charleston tomorrow at 3 p.m. The tournament win is the first for them since they defeated Samford 4-3 back in 2009.
Davidson also avenged a 4-3 defeat to the Terriers (8-13) earlier this year during the regular season and improved to 12-7 in the all-time series.
Like they did in nine of their last 10 matches to close out the regular season, the Wildcats jumped out to the early 1-0 lead by taking home the doubles point. The teams of Schafer and Gee, and Kevin Moore (Overland Park, Kan.) and Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) carried Davidson to the doubles point with 8-5 and 8-2 wins at the No. 1 and 3 spot.
The win for Schafer and Gee was the duos team-high 10th of the season as they pushed their winning streak to two in a row. For Moore and Mark, they evened their record at 8-8 and also won their second straight.
Schafer and Gee then led the charge in singles play as they rolled to straight-set wins to push the Wildcats' lead out to 3-0. Schafer, who earlier this year took a three-setter over Tinus Van Wyk, had his number again, taking a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 1. The sophomore won his second straight, and third in the last four matches, to even his overall record at 12-12.
Gee, who dropped his set back on Mar. 29 to Wofford's Michael Schecter at No. 2, picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win over Alan Donald at No. 4 to give him an 8-12 mark in singles action.
Wofford picked up a team point at No. 2 to make it 3-1, but freshman Ethan Kallick (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made sure it would not go down to the wire again, much like the first meeting between the two schools, with a solid 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 6 to seal up the win for Davidson. The first-year Wildcat won his third singles match in the last four matches, moving to 4-3 on the year.
Davidson now prepares for its matchup against the Cougars tomorrow at 3 p.m. The two squads met ten days ago on Apr. 10, with CofC earning a 7-0 win on their home courts.
