DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson nearly erased an 8-1 deficit behind Ann Fucigna's (Darien, Conn.) career afternoon, but the High Point Panthers used some late scoring to halt the streaking Wildcats in taking a 13-10 National Lacrosse Conference game on a windy Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
Fucigna, coming off a four-goal outing last weekend at Liberty, netted a career-best five goals and tallied seven points to lead the Wildcats (4-10, 3-3 NLC), and she was part of a run that saw the 'Cats get to within one (9-8) in the middle stages of the second half, scoring four of the Wildcats' seven goals in the run.
Erin Keitel (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Alanna Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) each had multi-goal games with two scores apiece, while Erin Doherty (Cincinnati, Ohio) added a goal and assist. Parker pushed her consecutive goal streak to 22 games and Doherty's assist was her team-best 13th on the season.
High Point's (12-3, 6-1 NLC) Grace Gaeng pushed her NLC-best goal total to 45 with four scores, while Mackenzie Carroll and Alexis Goldman each put two goals in the back of the net. Sara Kuhlman matched Gaeng for team-high points honor for the Panthers, assisting on three goals and netting one of her own.
Davidson saw its three-game win streak come to an end, while HPU pushed its streak to six straight.
Trailing 8-1 after NLC-leading scorer Gaeng went for back-to-back scores at the 10:04 and 8:57 marks in the first half, Fucigna book-ended a 7-1 run that closed out the first half and carried over into the second period. It turned an 8-1 Wildcat deficit into just a one-goal lead for High Point.
The freshman hooked up with fellow classmate Liz Edwards (Cincinnati) to start the rally, then opened up the second half with two more goals, one on a free-position shot, and closed out the run with an unassisted score at the 19:22 mark to make it 9-8. Fucigna also registered one of her two assists in the run as she earned a helper on Doherty's goal at the 4:44 mark of the first half.
Parker also assisted Fucigna by scoring both her goals during the rally, with her last one coming off a pass from Paige Logan (Garden City, N.Y.) with eight seconds left in the first half to cut the Panther lead to four, 8-4, before halftime.
High Point finally called its first timeout of the game after Fucigna's fourth goal, which made it 9-8 with 19:22 remaining, and used the break to its advantage. The Panthers came out and rattled off three straight goals over the next two minutes to push its lead out to 12-8 with 13:37 left in the contest.
Fucigna tried to help the 'Cats rally one more time when she sent a nice give-and-go pass to Keitel in the circle for her sixth point of the game. It was Kietel's 20th score of the year.
But, the Wildcats went scoreless then for the next nine minutes, getting just one more score from Fucigna for the final of 13-10.
In goal, Jessica Melby (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was credited with fours saves, while Lauren Hayes had two stops for HPU.
The Wildcats will play their final road contest of the year next Wednesday, Apr. 20, when they travel to Presbyterian for 4 p.m, for a NLC game.
