2/4/2011 9:07:23 PM | Wrestling
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson senior Alex Radsky won by fall for the second time this week, but it was not enough as VMI won four of the seven contested bouts to defeat the Wildcats, 32-12, in Southern Conference wrestling action Friday night in Belk Arena.
Led by Radsky, the Wildcats (5-9, 0-3 SoCon) rattled off three-straight wins to cut an early 14-0 deficit to two, but VMI (3-6, 1-1 SoCon) claimed the four remaining bouts to secure the win.
The meet started at 197 pounds with Josh Dommert and No. 13 Josh Wine (heavyweight) earning major decisions for VMI and the 'Cats forfeiting the 125-pound bout.
At 133 pounds, Radsky scored four early takedowns, before turning Luke Todd on his back and pinning him in just one minute, 48 seconds. Senior Vitaly Radsky (141 pounds) and sophomore Scott Ray (149) then followed with decisions for the Wildcats. Radsky defeated David Yost, 8-2, while Ray scored just a second period escape and held Ryan Goodsell down for the duration of the third period for a 1-0 victory.
Davidson's injury-depleted lineup had to spot VMI an additional 12 points at 157 and 165 points though, and Matt Brock and Evan Dill earned decisions at 174 and 184 for the final margin.
Just four dual meets remain for the Wildcats before the Southern Conference Championships. Davidson will wrestle Thursday, Feb. 10 against Campbell in Belk Arena starting at 7 p.m. before hitting the road to take on SoCon foe Chattanooga (Feb. 13) and Gardner-Webb (Feb. 16). The regular season concludes Sunday, Feb. 20 in Belk Arena against SoCon foe Appalachian State.
Notes: Alex Radsky improved his record to a career-best 22-7 … the pin was his second in three matches after tallying just one in the first 26 matches of the season … Vitaly Radsky (16-3) has won six of his last seven matches, and his lone loss came in overtime … Ray presently has a team-best five-match winning streak … Charlie Wolff (16-7) surrendered a bonus point for the first time this season in his major decision loss to No. 15 Wine.
