DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson College will celebrate the Men of the Lefty Driesell Years and Mike Maloy '70 with a reunion on the weekend of the Wildcats' final home game of the 2010-11 campaign, a Southern Conference contest against UNCG Feb. 26, at 2 p.m. in Belk Arena.
Charles “Lefty” Driesell along with many of his former players, including Terry Holland '64, Jerry Kroll '70, Fred Hetzel '65 and Dick Snyder '66, and assistant coaches and support staff will be back on campus for the weekend and honored at halftime of the game against the Spartans.
The weekend includes a special remembrance and celebration of the life of Mike Maloy '70, Davidson's first African-American varsity scholarship athlete who Driesell called “the greatest player I ever coached.” On the court, Maloy led the Wildcats to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including two straight Elite Eight runs, and off the court, he was a pioneer who used his prominence as a national basketball star to improve race relations both on campus and in the Town of Davidson community.
The college has established a permanent tribute to Maloy that will reside in the Nisbet Lobby of the Baker Sports Complex. It will be on display for the first time at Saturday's game and was made possible with the help of Davidson students John Rogers '11, Andrew Ma '12 and Greg Vereb '12, who produced a documentary on the life of Maloy for a class project. In addition, the college, with the leadership of several of Maloy's former teammates and fraternity brothers, has committed to a $1-million fundraising effort to establish the Mike Maloy Basketball Scholarship.
The 2010-11 season marks the 50th anniversary of Driesell's first campaign at Davidson. He coached the Wildcats for nine seasons and posted an overall record of 176-65, including a record of 73-27 in Southern Conference games. He was named the league's Coach of the Year in four consecutive seasons (1963-66) and guided the Wildcats to five regular-season championships and three SoCon Tournament titles.
After Davidson advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 1966, Driesell guided the Wildcats to the Elite Eight in 1968 and 1969. The SoCon announced recently that he will be inducted into its Hall of Fame this May, joining Hetzel, Davidson's first SoCon Hall of Famer, who was inducted in 2010.
The current Wildcat men's basketball team has won seven of its last eight and returns to action at home Thursday against Elon in John M. Belk Arena. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
