Men Win Second Straight CCSA Championship, Women Finish Second

ATHENS, Ga. -- With another individual win for junior Geoffrey Peitz, sophomore Drew Onken and junior Curtis Chaney and another NCAA B-cut, CCSA and school-record winning time in the 400 freestyle relay, the Davidson men's swimming and diving team won their second straight CCSA Championship as competition concluded Saturday night at the Gabrielson Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia.
Peitz won the 200 back for his third individual championship of the meet, in a CCSA and school-record, NCAA B-cut time of 1:45.67, and was named CCSA Men's Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet. His dominant performance included three individual titles — the 200 IM, 100 back and 200 back, all in school and CCSA record, NCAA B-cut times, while swimming on three winning relays — the 200 and 400 freestyle and the 400 medley relay, also all school and CCSA record, NCAA B-cut times.
Chaney won a second title with a win in the 100 free, and Onken — who was named co-Men's Swimmer of the Year for winning four CCSA weekly honors, won his third championship with a win in the 200 breast. Peitz, Chaney, sophomore Wills Cooper and senior Bryan Droll finished off the meet with a school and CCSA-record NCAA B-cut time of 3:00.61. Davidson head coach John Young repeated as Men's Coach of the Year, leading the Wildcats to a second straight championship.
Davidson entered the day with a four-point margin over the College of Charleston, who ended up in third with 796 points. The Wildcats, who led at the end of all three days, finished with 844 points, ahead of runner-up Gardner-Webb with 814.
The Wildcat women finished in second place with 585 points, behind Florida Gulf Coast, who won a second straight title with 879.5 points. Gardner-Webb was third with 488.5 points ahead of Georgia Southern, who was fourth with 456.
On the final day of competition, senior Lindsey Martin won her second title of the meet, swimming a school and CCSA-record NCAA B-cut time of 49.41. She rebroke the record with a leadoff leg of 48.95 in the Wildcats' winning 400 freestyle relay, en route to earning her second consecutive Women's Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet and Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Year awards. Along with teammates senior Anna Stringfield, sophomore Jean DeOrnellas and senior Emily Castle, Martin picked up her second relay win of the meet to go along with individual titles in both the 50 and 100 freestyles. She swam three individual NCAA B-cut times — the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles, and contributed to one NCAA B-cut relay time, the 400 free relay.
Freshman Kaliya Burton-Akright won the Wildcat women's final individual title, scoring 254.04 points on the 1-meter.
Freshman Will Fox was the Wildcats' top finisher in the 1650 freestyle, finishing seventh in a time of 16:33.43. Classmates Drew Gustavson and Quinn Waggoner also swam in the finals for the Wildcats, finishing 11th and 12th respectively with times of 17:13.84 and 17:27.15. Senior Jessica Delgehausen finished eighth in the event with a time of 17:15.84 to lead the Wildcat women. Sophomore Lillie Seifart (16th, 17:48.14), sophomore Allison Cottle (17th, 17:49.04), junior Meagan Madden (19th, 18:08.05) and freshman Megan McLeod (21st, 18:18.41) also swam the event.
Peitz completed the sweep of the backstrokes with a winning time of 1:45.67, his third school and CCSA record, NCAA B-cut of the meet. Freshman Ethan Levinson finished third in the championship heat with a time of 1:50.62, and senior Tennant Brastow (11th, 1:58.47) and sophomore Marcus Carson (13th, 2:01.81) swam in the consolation heat. On the women's side, Stringfield finished third in the championship heat with a time of 2:02.77, and Madden was 16th in the consolation final with a time of 2:14.15.
The Wildcats swept the podium in the 100 free, as Chaney finished with a time of 45.48 and ahead of teammates Droll (45.78) and Cooper (45.83). Waggoner placed 12th in the consolation final with a time of 48.41, and sophomore Ben Wilde was 14th in 48.74. Martin broke her own school and CCSA record in the 100 free with her third NCAA B-cut time of the meet, a 49.41. Castle finished fourth in the championship final with a time of 51.96, and DeOrnellas was sixth in 52.41.
Onken won the 100 breast with a time of 2:01.14, his second championship of the meet, and senior Ben Lucas was seventh with a time of 2:08.48 in the championship heat. Gustavson won the consolation final with a time of 2:08.90, finishing ninth in the event, followed by classmate Drew Glenn (2:12.12). Senior Ineke Stegger was the top finisher for the Wildcat women, swimming a sixth-place time of 2:22.02 in the championship heat, and freshman Caroline Vrana was 15th in the consolation final with a time of 2:26.42.
The Wildcat men had four swimmers in the championship heat of the 200 fly, led by junior David Kerman's runner-up time of 1:50.91. Freshman Thomas Bigham finished just behind with a time of 1:51.53, and Fox (seventh, 1:55.44) and Burquist (eighth, 1:56.01) also swam in the championship heat. For the Wildcat women, sophomore Kelsi Hobbs finished third in a school-record time of 2:03.58. Freshman Liz Mace (11th, 2:08.94), junior Lauren Kamperman (13th, 2:09.62) and senior Casey Gemunder (2:10.16) competed in the consolation final.
Burton-Akright won the 3-meter event with a score of 254.05, the Wildcats' final individual champion of the meet, and junior Jessica Ardecky finished 11th with a score of 199.70.

Onken won the 100 breast with a time of 2:01.14, his second championship of the meet, and senior Ben Lucas was seventh with a time of 2:08.48 in the championship heat. Gustavson won the consolation final with a time of 2:08.90, finishing ninth in the event, followed by classmate Drew Glenn (2:12.12). Senior Ineke Stegger was the top finisher for the Wildcat women, swimming a sixth-place time of 2:22.02 in the championship heat, and freshman Caroline Vrana was 15th in the consolation final with a time of 2:26.42.

The Wildcat men finished their meet with their third NCAA B-cut relay time, as Peitz, Chaney, Cooper and Droll set a new school and CCSA record with a first-place time of 3:00.61. Davidson did the same on the women's side, as Martin, Stringfield, DeOrnellas and Castle swam the Wildcat women's second NCAA B-cut relay time of 3:22.16. Martin's lead off leg of 48.95 broke the school record in the 100 free for a second time in the day.
