DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team snapped their five-match losing streak with an impressive 7-0 blanking of visiting USC-Upstate on Friday afternoon at the Convington Tennis Courts.
The Wildcats (4-6), playing on their outdoor courts for the first time this year, rolled to its fourth win at home and picked up their second 7-0 victory of the season. The Spartans remained winless at 0-5 as they played the second of three matches this week.
USC-Upstate had to forfeit two of the singles spots and a doubles spot, giving Davidson an early 3-0 lead after it capped the doubles point.
After a close match at No. 1 doubles, in which Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany) and Brite Moniz-Soares (Angra Do Heroismo, Portugal) took an 8-6 win, Davidson cruised at the No. 2 spot. Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.) and Stephani Synn (Conover, N.C.) blanked the Spartans 8-0 for their first win together as a doubles pair.
Much was the same then in singles action with Galainena picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4, while Synn picked up a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 1 to snap a seven-match skid
Moniz-Soares shutout her opponent at No. 3 (6-0, 6-0) for her team-best sixth singles win of the season and Rauh took care of Ana-Sofia Camberos at No. 2 in a third-set super tiebreaker, 10-6 for the Wildcats last point. Rauh improved to 3-6 in singles play.
The 'Cats play one more match this weekend, heading to Blacksburg, Va., for a 5 p.m. match against Virginia Tech. They then will take a break until returning to the courts on March 12 at home vs. Georgia Southern to open Southern Conference play.
