Wrestling Claims Six Weight Classes at VMI's Rat Rumble

LEXINGTON, Va.. -
Led by freshman Kevin Birmingham's two pins and a technical fall, the Davidson wrestling team claimed six of 10 weight classes Saturday at the Rat Rumble hosted by VMI.

Birmingham was dominant at 141 pounds wrestling in his first collegiate matches. Junior Matt Zarth (125 pounds), freshman Anthony Elias (133), sophomore CT Talevi (157), senior Tyler Mullen (165) and sophomore Scott Patrick (184) also won their repective weight classes. Freshman Ben Hartshorn was second to Elias at 133.

"We wrestled really well but we still made a lot of little mistakes and need to correct them," said head coach Bob Patnesky. "I am really proud of the team for their great performance in the first tournament of the year.  It feels really good to start the year off on a positive note."

Birmingham went 3-0 earning a pin in 1:55, a technical fall in 6:19, and a pin in 3:43. Zarth won via a major decision and a decision. Elias earned a major decision before defeating his teammate Hartshorn by decision. Talevi advanced with a decision begore earning a pair of major decisions. Mullen won via a major decision and a decision. Patrick was undefeated with a pair of third-round pins.

Davidson will next compete at the NC State Open Sunday.
