Wildcats Compete at Wake Forest W. Tennis Invitational Over Weekend

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Competing in their third Fall event of the 2011 season, the Davidson women's tennis team traveled to Wake Forest and played in the Demon Deacons' Invitational over the weekend of Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
Eight Wildcats in all saw action over the weekend with all eight seeing action in both singles and doubles.
For the third weekend, Brites Moniz-Soares (Angra Do Heroismo, Portugal) had another strong showing at a Fall invitational. The sophomore finished fourth overall in the main C Singles draw. She opened the weekend with a three-set win, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, and then earned another three-set victory over a VCU opponent to reach the semifinals, before closing the weekend in fourth.
Senior Stephani Synn (Conover, N.C.) started with a 6-2, 7-5 setback in the A Singles bracket to Kayla Duncan of Wake Forest, who eventually won the No. 1 singles bracket. Synn came back to earn a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory in her first consolation match against a tough Virginia Tech player. The senior then closed out the tournament on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Petra Dajevic of Radford.
Two Wildcats competed in the D Singles draw with Elise Held (Butler, Pa.) and Nisha Crouser (Columbus, Ohio) representing Davidson.
Katharine Dicconson (Pacific Grove, Calif.) and Catherine Wood (Greensboro, N.C.) each played singles in the E Singles draw. Dicconson dropped her first match on Friday (6-4, 6-1), but regrouped to score a 6-4, 6-3 win on Saturday in a consolation match.
Rounding out the singles players were Frizzi Bschorer (Barnin, Germany) and Blake Nickles (Anderson, S.C.), who each competed in the F Singles draw. Nickles won a three-setter over SoCon-foe Elon, 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals, but then lost a straight set match to finish her weekend.
Bschorer lost to an Elon player, 6-1, 6-1, but bounced back to earn a 7-6, 6-3 win over a player from Richmond, and then ended her weekend by scoring a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Sara Tegner of Radford.
Four doubles teams filled the A, B and C draws for the 'Cats. The No. 1 team of Synn and Crouser dropped 8-1 decision on Friday, but came back strong for a 9-7 win against a pair from Campbell. Then after falling 8-2 in their next match, the duo finished third on the consolation side with a very impressive 8-5 win against a pair from Missouri of the Big 12.
Moniz-Soares and Held played in the B draw and started the weekend with an excellent 9-8 triumph, but dropped a close 9-7 match in the quarterfinals.
Bschorer and Nickles were the No. 3 doubles team for Davidson, while Dicconson and Wood teamed up in the same bracket. Dicconson and Wood opened with an 8-5 victory over a team from Louisville, before falling in the next round on the winners side. The duo finished seventh overall with a 9-7 win against Radford's No. 4 doubles team.
Davidson takes a weekend off before hosting its second tournament, the Davidson Fall Classic II, Oct. 14-15 at the Convington Tennis Courts.
