DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team had four of its players competing at the ITA Carolina Regionals over the weekend on the campus of North Carolina, Oct. 14-18.
Joe Schafer, Calum Gee and Chris Mark represented the Wildcats in singles action, while Kevin Moore teamed with Mark in doubles play.
Gee had the best results on the singles side, reaching the round of 64 when he started the weekend off with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Andrew Prince of Elon. In the round of 64, the senior fell against a tough North Carolina opponent, 6-4, 6-1, to see his run end.
Schafer, who had reached the round of 16 and 32 the past two years in singles play, dropped his first match in a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, to Southern Conference-foe College of Charleston.
Mark lost his first round match by the score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to an N.C. State player.
Davidson's pair of doubles teams played well, each picking up a win. The duo of Schafer and Gee, who reached the round of 16 last year, got a first-round bye into the round of 32. They then picked up an 8-6 win to again make a run into the round of 16, but their weekend was halted there when they suffered a 8-3 defeat.
Mark and Moore were the Wildcats' other doubles team. The pair started off strong, earning an 8-4 win over a team from Elon to reach the round of 32. Their run came to an end though when the ninth-seeded team from N.C. State took an 8-4 decision.
Davidson is hosting an alumni match this Saturday, Oct. 22, before it will close out its Fall season with a trip to the Alabama Invitational in Mobile, Ala., Oct. 28-30.
