DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Nicky Kunz (Hilton Head, S.C.) led a group of Wildcats in capturing five combined Singles and Doubles Flights as the freshman won the Flight seven singles bracket and teamed with Robert Lightbourn (Nassau, Bahamas) to win the Flight four doubles bracket as Davidson hosted the third annual Jeff Frank Invitational on Friday and Saturday at the Covington Tennis Courts.
Joining Davidson over the weekend was cross-county rival Charlotte along with SoCon-foe Appalachian State and Campbell.
It's the third weekend in a row a Wildcat has captured a title in either singles or doubles. Kunz earned a super tie-breaker win (10-5) against Campbell's Garrison Kinney after splitting his first two sets, 6-7, 6-3. He then won two tie-breaker sets against Charlotte and cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over league-foe Appalachian State's Zeke Sansing.
Connor Evins earned his first singles title of the Fall season by going 2-1 in the Flight six singles draw. His two wins came against Charlotte (7-6, 6-4) and ASU (6-3 6-3).
Davidson cleaned up in the doubles Flights, taking three of the four draws. The No. 1 team of Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) and Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) picked up a pair of wins (8-6 & 8-4) against Campbell and the Mountaineers.
The duo of Kevin Moore (Overland Park, Kan.) and Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) had a perfect two days, going 3-0 in their three doubles matches in the Flight two doubles draw. They scored a 9-8 victory against a pair from Campbell, then earned two 9-7 triumphs over Charlotte's and ASU's doubles teams.
Rounding out the strong doubles play was Kunz and Lightbourn. The two Wildcats had wins of 8-3, 8-5, and 8-0 at the No. 4 Flight doubles draw to go a perfect 3-0 over the two-day tournament.
Davidson is off until Oct. 14-18 when it goes to the ITA Carolinas Regional, hosted by North Carolina.
