Clarion, UNCG Wrestling Visit Belk Arena This Weekend

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Clarion and defending Southern Conference champion UNCG will take on the Davidson wrestling team this weekend in Belk Arena. The match against Clarion is set for 9 a.m. Saturday, while the Spartans will visit Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

Scouting the Wildcats: Davidson (2-4) enters the weekend after a close, 23-18 loss to Duke Thursday night. Despite some tremendous efforts, the 'Cats were unable to turn one more decision in their favor for the win. Davidson built a 15-0 lead, but the Blue Devils rattled off six-straight wins, including two in overtime, for the in. 141-pounder Vitaly Radsky (10-1) and heavyweight Charlie Wolff (12-4) both improved on their career-best starts. Matt Zarth (125) picked up his fourth forfeit victory in his last five matches. Duke did not have any challengers for Alex Radsky (133) either, giving him his team-leading 16th win of the season.

Scouting the Golden Eagles: Clarion, of the Eastern Wrestling League, is 2-0 after defeating Edinboro just before Christmas, 25-21 and, most recently, defeating Princeton, 22-15. The Golden Eagles will head to Chapel Hill immediately following the match to take on North Carolina at 3 p.m. They will then head back north to challenge No. 4 Virginia Tech Sunday night. Clarion boasts the country's eighth-ranked 157-pounder in James Fleming, who has compiled a 20-4 record this season. Anthony White has compiled a 14-6 record at 149 pounds, while Bekzod Abdurakhmonov is 15-4 at 165 pounds.

Scouting the Spartans: SoCon foe UNCG is 2-7 after starting the season with a very competitive schedule that included four nationally-ranked teams in No. 4 Wisconsin, No. 15 Virginia Tech, No. 24 Indiana and No. 10 Lehigh. Their lone wins came over Northern Illinois and George Mason. No. 16 Ivan Lopouchanski leads UNCG with a 26-7 record at 149 pounds, while heavyweight Peter Sturgeon is 20-10. Lopouchanski was the SoCon champion at 141 pounds last season, while Sturgeon was the runner-up at heavyweight. Byron Sigmon (17-9), the defending 174-pound SoCon champion, is also slated to compete.

The Series: This is the first meeting between Clarion and Davidson since 2008. Davidson traveled to Clarion, Pa., but lost, 14-31. Alex Radsky earned one of the 'Cats' four wins in the match. Clarion also prevailed in the only other meeting between the schools in 2007, taking a 33-12 win in Belk Arena. Davidson is 1-15 all-time against UNCG, suffering a 40-9 defeat last season.

Up Next: The Wildcats will travel to Boston for the Boston University Duals, Saturday, Jan. 22. Davidson will take on American International College, Boston University and Sacred Heart. The 'Cats will not return to Belk Arena until Friday, Feb. 4.
