
Lyons’ Solid Weekend Paces M. Tennis at Southern Intercollegiate

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) reached the round of eight in the Division III Singles bracket and three other Wildcats earned at least one win over the weekend at the Southern Intercollegiate hosted by Georgia in Athens, Ga.
Joining Lyons over the weekend was No. 1 singles player Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) as well as Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) and Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.).
Lyons got things rolling on Friday with a first round three-set win, earning the victory by taking a tie-breaker in the final set, 7-4. After falling 4-6 in the first set, the senior came back with a 6-4 win of his own before closing out the match with a 7-6 win. From there, he cruised to a two-set, 6-2, 6-3, win over Joe Delinks of UCF and then won another two-set affair, 6-2, 6-3, over Mario Hernandez of Lipsomb.
Reaching the round of eight, Lyons took on SoCon-foe Carlos Arboleda of Elon and forced the match to a third set with second-set tie breaker win after falling in the first set, 7-5. He then fell in the final set 6-4.
Gee opened his weekend with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Oliver Reyonlds of Samford. Then in the final 16, the junior took on Alex Zotov, one of the seeded singles players in the Division II bracket, and fell 6-3, 6-4.
Also opening up his weekend with a win was Schafer, who played in the Division I Singles bracket. The sophomore came back from dropping his first set, 6-4, to score a pair of 7-5 wins to move onto the second round. There he faced Drake Bernstein, who was seeded seventh in the bracket, and came up short in a 6-3, 6-2 match.
Despiting dropping his first match of the weekend, Mark came back to score a 6-2, 6-2 win in his consolation singles match.
Lyons and Mark teamed up in the doubles action and blanked Liberty, 8-0, it their first match. Their second match was against a pair from Elon, falling 8-6.
Competing in the Division I Doubles bracket was the pair of Schafer and Gee, who opened their first match with a clean sweep of Radford, 8-0. They then faced a team from Georgia and saw their weekend come to end at 8-5.
Davidson continues its Fall schedule when it hosts the Jeff Frank Invitational this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 1 and 2.
