
Men’s Tennis Plays at UVa Classic in First Fall Event

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Sophomore Chris Mark (Union City, Calif.) picked up a fifth place finish, while he and Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) took home third place in doubles action as the Davidson men's tennis team played in their first fall event over the weekend at the University of Virginia Fall Classic.
In addition to Mark and Lyon, Davidson was also represented by Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) and Joe Schafer (Orchard?Park, N.Y.) at the classic.
Mark started his weekend off with a three-set win over a player from NCSU. He dropped the first set, but came back to take 7-5 and 6-1 decisions in the next two sets to move onto the second round of the gold singles bracket. Mark took on a player from Virginia Tech and fell 6-3, 6-2, but regrouped in the fifth place match to take home a 6-3, 7-5 decision over a player from William & Mary.
Schafer, Gee and Lyons each dropped their first round matches, but came back strong in their consolation matches. Despite losing both of his matches, Schafer was in each of the matches, falling 6-4, 6-4 and then 7-6, 7-5.
Gee, who competed in the black singles bracket, lost a three-setter to a player from Maryland (6-4, 6-7, 6-3), but came back to win his first match in the consolation bracket. He finished out his weekend with a setback in his third match.
Lyons forced a three-setter in his first round match before falling, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, but came back and took home a win in his consolation match.
In doubles action, Mark and Lyons had a strong weekend. They started the weekend off with an 8-3 first-round win, before dropping a second round match to George Washington, 8-5. To finish out their weekend, the duo took home an 8-3 decision over Nebraska to capture third place in their doubles bracket.
The Wildcats other duo in doubles was the team of Schafer and Gee. They forced a tie-breaker against a pair from Virginia Tech, but came up short (10-8) in the tie-breaker. The pair came back to get third place on the consolation side with an 8-3 win over a team from Virginia.
Davidson will continue its fall season by traveling to the USC Upstate Fall Classic this weekend, Sept. 17-19.
