DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson BUZZKILL, a 3-on-3 tournament and auction, spearheaded by Wildcat guard Bryant Barr, raised over $38,000 Sunday afternoon in Belk Arena. The money will be donated to Nothing But Nets, an organization dedicated to preventing malaria in Africa by providing anti-mosquito bed nets for families to sleep under.
The donation allows Nothing But Nets to send over 3,800 insecticide-covered bed nets to African villages, protecting more than 15,000 people from malaria. The event raised over $16,000 in 2009, its first year.
“The people who were involved and the kids who participated in the tournament were incredible in helping with this effort, and we were able to more than double what we raised last year,” said Barr. “I appreciate the care, commitment and support everybody showed in making this a possibility. I hope to continue BUZZKILL next year and keep the work going!”
Thirty teams with four players on a squad participated in the tournament. Teams were encouraged to raise extra money by getting sponsors, and the team which raised the most money received the first pick in a draft of coaches.
The team that picked first raised over $2,500 and picked former Wildcat and current Golden State guard Stephen Curry. The other top-two teams raised over $2,000 and over $1,500 and picked Brendan McKillop and Will Archambault, respectively. All told, the kids raised over $15,000.
An online silent auction and a live auction accompanied the tournament. The luxury trip to San Francisco along with tickets to a Golden State game was the highest live-auction item, drawing $3,200, followed by a round of golf for three with Curry, which drew $1,200. The framed NBA?Trading Cards signed by Davidson greats Curry, Fred Hetzel and Dick Snyder drew $601, which was the highest online auction item.
