Curry Celebrity Classic June 21 will benefit the Davidson-based Ada Jenkins Center.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – NBA great Dell Curry and his son, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, have announced the creation of the inaugural Curry Celebrity Classic, a charity golf tournament that will take place June 21, at River Run Country Club in Davidson, N.C.
The Curry Celebrity Classic combines Stephen and Dell's passion for golf with their dedication to giving back to the greater Charlotte community. With local celebrities and other stars from the NBA expected to attend, the proceeds from this first annual event will benefit the Davidson-based Ada Jenkins Center. Stephen volunteered at this non-profit, which spearheads educational, family and health services for many area residents, during his days at Davidson College.
“I am really excited about our first annual celebrity golf tournament that will benefit a charity that means a lot to me,” said Stephen. “Golf is definitely a sport my family loves to play, and I'm looking forward to seeing many friendly faces from the Charlotte and Davidson communities at the course. Even though my new basketball home is on the West coast, staying connected to my hometown and alma mater through events like this is a priority for me.”
The Curry Celebrity Classic will also be hosted by Athletes United for Youth, a non-profit led by founder Dell and celebrity partner ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas. The organization has been investing its time and resources in the Charlotte area since 1998, and Dell has previously hosted similar golf tournaments to raise money for Athletes United for Youth programs.
“Playing an active role in the community is extremely important to our family,” said Dell. “We have hosted previous golf tournaments which the Charlotte community rallied behind. I feel very fortunate to share that experience with Stephen as we look to grow this event and help more people each year.”
The tournament will be a scramble format comprised of three amateur golfers and one celebrity golfer beginning with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Golfing or other sponsorship opportunities for this event are still available. Interested parties should contact Octagon's Zack Rosenberg at 703-905-3390 or zack.rosenberg@octagon.com.
Stephen Curry parlayed a solid rookie campaign into a runner-up finish for NBA Rookie of the Year after capturing Western Conference Rookie of the Month honors in January, March and April. While averaging 17.5 points and 5.9 assists per game and shooting 46 percent from the field during the season, Curry also joined legends Michael Jordan and Oscar Robertson as the only rookies to have more than one 30-point, 12-assist game.
Dell Curry played 16 seasons in the NBA, including 10 in Charlotte, and averaged 11.7 points, shooting over 40 percent from behind the arc for his career. He was also named NBA Sixth Man of the Year for the 1993-1994 season.
