GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior right fielder Sam Payne homered twice to give the Davidson Wildcats an early lead, but the UNC Greensboro Spartans rode a six-run third inning to a 12-5 win to complete the Southern Conference series sweep Wednesday at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Payne (3-for-5, 3 RBI) hit a two-run blast in the first inning and a solo shot in the third to lift Davidson (18-23, 5-16 SoCon) to an early 3-1 lead, but Greensboro (18-23, 5-16 SoCon) put up six runs on three hits and four walks in the bottom of the third to take control. The Spartans would lead the rest of the way, adding single scores in the fourth, sixth and seventh and a pair in the eighth en route to the 12-5 decision.
Sophomore left fielder Seth Freeman had two hits and drove in a pair of runs, and sophomore center fielder Drew Gadaire and sophomore first baseman Calvin Sigelbaum also had one of the Wildcats' seven hits.
Ray Quinones led the Spartans at the plate, batting 4-for-5 with three RBI, and Harry Slade, Lloyd Enzor, Eric Brindle, Zach Leach and Kris Richards each added two hits for the Spartans, who finished with 15.
Colby Hyatt (W, 6-3) picked up his second win of the series, scattering seven hits for five runs (three earned) over eight innings.
Sophomore right-hander Brian Russell (L, 3-3) took his second loss of the series, allowing seven runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Freeman got the first hit of the night in the first at-bat on a hit up the middle. He safely stole second base, but it didn't matter when Payne cleared the bases, putting his seventh home run of the season over the wall in right field to give Davidson an early 2-0 lead.
The Spartans got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Russell hit right fielder Chris Barker, who stole second and scored on Enzor's two-out triple that carried over Gadaire's head.
Hyatt faced the minimum in the second and struck out the first two batters of the third before Payne's second home run of the game, a line drive down the right field line, pushed Davidson's lead to 3-1.
Greensboro took control of the game with six runs on three hits and four walks in the third. Russell walked Slade to start and got an out as Barker avoided a double-play ball in the next at-bat. Three straight walks yielded the Spartan's first run before back-to-back doubles from Quinones and Brindle drove in a pair of runs apiece. Junior left-hander Mac Hunter struck out Leach before Richards drove in the sixth and final run with a base hit to right center to put the Spartans ahead 7-3.
Greensboro added another run in the fourth on a two-out, RBI-double by designated hitter Ed Jayjack, and pulled ahead 9-3 with a run on a pair of hits against junior Mike Frongello as Quinones plated Enzor in the sixth.
Davidson didn't score for three innings before Freeman drove in two runs on a two-out base hit into center field in the seventh. Junior designated hitter Will General, who reached on a fielding error by Enzor at first, and freshman shortstop Michael Zeblo, who took a one-out walk, both scored on the play. Payne followed Freeman with his third hit of the day to put runners on the corners, but Hyatt got Gadaire to fly out to end the inning with Greensboro leading 9-5.
The Spartans tacked on a run in the seventh on two hits and an error and got two more in the eighth, on a two-out, RBI-single by Slade and the Wildcats' fourth error, for the final 12-5. The Wildcats left two on the bases in the seventh and had two on with one out in the eighth but failed to score, before Zach Furl retired three straight in the ninth.
Greensboro won the first two meetings of the broken-up series, 6-5 on March 30 and 7-1 on April 7.
After playing 11 of the last 13 games on the road, Davidson will finish the season playing seven of the last 11 games at Wilson Field. The Wildcats will host the College of Charleston in a three-game SoCon set this weekend, with the opening game set for 7 p.m. Friday. Saturday's game is scheduled for 2 p.m., with the series finale scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
