CHARLESTON, S.C. – Davidson saw its successful season come to an end at the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Tournament on Saturday as the Wildcats fell 4-0 to No. 1-seeded College of Charleston in the semifinals on the campus of CofC.
Davidson, seeded fourth in the tournament, fell behind early 1-0 after dropping doubles matches at the No.1 and 3 spot. The senior duo of Teresa Wang (Charlotte, N.C.) and Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) closed out their season with a 12-9 record after falling 8-3.
The team of Ali Gores (Charlotte, N.C.) and Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.) also fell to 8-3 to give CofC (19-9) the team doubles point.
Singles play saw the Cougars earn wins at the No. 1 and 4-5 positions to seal up the match and earn a trip to the SoCon finals. At No. 1, Berry, who was named to the All-SoCon First Team for the second year in a row, ended her career with a 13-9 singles record after dropping a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Holly Dowse. Berry closed out her four-year Wildcat career with 61 singles wins.
Gores, also playing her final match as a Wildcat, came up short in a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Laura Borza at No. 5, while junior Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany) suffered a 6-0, 6-3 defeat at No. 4 to Kinsey Casey. Gores matched her career-high with 10 singles wins in her final campaign, while Rauh closed out the season with a 11-12 overall mark.
The Wildcats final senior to play her last match was Wang, who had dropped a 7-5 first-set decision, but was up 2-0 when the match was decided. The senior battled back from injuries during her junior campaign to finish 11-9 in her senior year. He ended her career with 35 singles wins and 40 doubles victories.
Despite the defeat, it was another solid year for the 'Cats as they went 15-8 overall and 7-3 in SoCon matches, while earning one of the four seeds to advance to the league tournament. It was the sixth time in the last seven years the Wildcats have tallied at least 15 wins in a year and marked the ninth straight season they have had a winning record in league matches.
