DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) was honored by the Southern Conference women's tennis coaches by claiming one of the six spots on the league's first team and earning the league's Sportsmanship Award as announced today.
It marks the second year in a row that Berry has earned a spot on the All-SoCon First Team and she also made it two straight in claiming the Sportsmanship Award. It's the third straight season overall a Wildcat has garnered the award as Meredith Skeeters was honored in 2008 prior to Berry winning it the past two seasons.
The senior, who also was named to the All-SoCon Second Team as a sophomore in 2008, led the Wildcats to a spot in this weekend's league tournament by going 13-8 at the No. 1 singles position. Berry's 13 wins were tied for third-best in the SoCon at the top singles spot. Of those 13 wins, five of them came in three-setters as she went 5-1 in those matches.
Berry helped the Wildcats go 83-49 as a team in singles action, getting 37 of those team singles wins against league opponents. For her career, Berry has gone 61-27 overall in singles play, winning at least 13 matches all four years, and 25-15 vs. the SoCon.
She also had a successful senior campaign in doubles play, teaming up with fellow senior Teresa Wang (Charlotte, N.C.) at the No. 1 position. The duo won a team-best 12 times and were 6-3 vs. the SoCon. They had the fourth-most wins in the league at the top spot.
Berry's doubles mark for her four-year playing career is 53-33, with 20 of those wins coming in league matches. She hit the 10-win mark all four years in doubles action.
The Wildcats (15-7, 7-3 SoCon), winners of three of their last four matches to close out the regular season and seven of the last nine overall, will square off against top-seed College of Charleston (18-9, 10-0 SoCon) on Saturday, Apr. 24 at 1 p.m. in the SoCon Tournament.
