DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Southern Conference today announced its postseason men's tennis awards and Davidson's senior Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.), sophomore Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) and freshman Joe Schafer (Orchard Park, N.Y.) were each honored with a spot on first and second teams as well as all-freshman team. Postseason balloting was conducted by the league's head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
The duo of Noble and Schafer were one of four doubles teams named to the all-league first-team. Gee claimed second-team honors at No. 5 singles as the All-SoCon Second Team selections were awarded based on position. In addition, Schafer filled out one of the six slots on the All-SoCon Freshman Team.
It marks the first time since 1998 that the Wildcats had at least three players garner all-conference honors. During that season, Jon Pastel was named to the first team in singles, while Ted Kaplan and Judson Sutherland were named to the league's first team for doubles.
As the Wildcats' No. 1 doubles team, Noble and Schafer finished with a team-best 12-5 record. Their .706 winning percentage was good for fourth-best in the SoCon, while their 6-3 league record was third-best at the No. 1 position. The duo, which never lost back-to-back matches and had a season-high five-match win streak, helped the Wildcats have a very successful run in doubles play during the year, closing with a team record of 34-27. Seven times Davidson swept the doubles action to start a match.
For his career, Noble accounted for 41 doubles wins (41-37), while ending his singles career with 37 wins after going 7-11 this year.
Schafer had a solid freshman campaign to help him garner all-freshman honors. The first-year player became the Wildcats' top singles player the fourth match into the start of his career and went on to go 10-9 overall. He picked up seven of those wins at No. 1 and went 4-6 vs. SoCon opponents.
The freshman had a brilliant start to his career, rattling off wins in his first five straight singles matches, including a thrilling three-set win at No. 59 Furman. For his hot start, Schafer was honored with the season's first SoCon Player of the Week honor.
Speaking of hot starts, after dropping his opening-season singles match at No. 66 Clemson, Gee got on a roll and never looked back. The sophomore went on to rattle off a career-best 10-match win streak on his way to pacing Davidson with a 15-3 overall mark. Of those 15 wins, 12 of them came at the No. 5 spot where Gee was 12-2.
Gee was even better when it came to facing SoCon opponents as he went a SoCon- and team-best 10-0 in league matches. The sophomore became the second Wildcat in the past thee years to go undefeated in league singles as Scott Myers went 9-0 in 2008.
In Gee's first two seasons, he has won 25 singles matches and added another 19 doubles wins, including his career-best 11 this year with partner Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.).
While having a winning doubles mark as a team, Davidson was also very impressive in singles action. The 'Cats earned 70 singles wins, going 70-51 and had a winning mark in SoCon matches at 32-28.
Davidson closed out the 2010 season with a 10-11 mark and 4-6 in SoCon play.
