BOONE, N.C. — Sophomore Calum Gee finished perfect in league matches, but the Davidson men's tennis team, in its final regular season match, came up short in a 6-1 defeat on the road at Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference action.
Davidson closed out the 2010 season with a 10-11 mark and 4-6 in SoCon play. ASU improved to 12-9 overall and 4-6 in league action. The Mountaineers have won the last six meetings between the two schools.
The match started with three tightly contested doubles matches, but the Wildcats were not able to grab the first team point as they were swept in all three. The No. 1 team of Eric Noble and Joe Schafer fell by the count of 8-6, finishing their season at 12-5, a team-best.
Walker Lyons and Gee dropped an 8-5 decision at No. 2, while Chris Mark and Sam Burns forced a tiebreaker, but fell short, 7-2 in the tiebreaker, falling 9-8 in the match. The Wildcats as a team had a very successful run in doubles play during the year, closing with a team record of 34-27.
The Wildcats lone point on the afternoon came from Gee, who capped off a brilliant second year with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Andrew McKinnon at No. 5 singles. The second-year player earned a team-best 15 singles wins to only three defeats and concluded a perfect run in league matches at 10-0. The last Wildcat to have a perfect league mark was Scott Myers in 2008 when he went 9-0.
Gee finished with the third-best winning percentage in the SoCon at .833 and was tops in the league at the No. 5 position with a 12-2 record.
Playing in their final career matches was Noble and Burns. Noble dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 2 to close out his senior year at 7-11 overall and 4-6 in league matches. The senior tallied 37 career wins and added another 41 wins in his four-year doubles career.
Burns nearly gave Davidson its second point, forcing a super tiebreaker after the match had been decided. He fell in his first set 6-4, but came back with his own 6-4 win, before falling 10-7 in the tiebreaker. After taking a year off last season, the senior ended his career with a 13-5 singles mark and an 8-2 mark in league matches, second-best on the team. He concluded his three-year career with a 35-26 record in singles play, while adding another 31 wins in doubles.
