Davidson Opens Southern Conference Play Against Wofford This Weekend

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats will open the 2010 Southern Conference baseball slate with a three-game set against the Wofford Terriers this weekend at Wilson Field.
Davidson (9-4) and Wofford (5-6) will open the series at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by a 2 p.m. first pitch on Saturday. The teams will play the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday. With rain in the forecast, game times could be shifted. Check back for the most up-to-date information.
Wofford will start RHP John Cornely on Friday and LHP J.D. Osborne on Saturday. Sunday's starter is TBD. Davidson will answer with senior LHP Thomas Middour Friday, followed by sophomore LHP Chris Lamb Saturday and sophomore RHP Ryan Overcash Sunday.

Davidson leads the all-time series 46-33, dating back to April 6, 1903.
Last Time Out
The Terriers won two out of three games last season at Wofford's Russell C. King Field. Wofford scored six runs in the first two innings of the opening game and held on for the 7-5 win Friday night. Michael Gilmartin hit a grand slam for the only runs the Terriers would need in the 4-2 win and pitched a shutout ninth inning to earn the save in the second game of the series. The Davidson Wildcats added to an early lead with 12 runs over the final four innings to take the final game of the series. Holding a tentative 4-3 lead, the Wildcats exploded for 10 runs over the sixth and seventh innings to take control of the game and never trailed the rest of the way.
About Wofford
The Terriers lost two out of three against Pittsburgh to open the season, losing the first two games 6-18 and 3-7 before winning the finale 9-8 in 10 innings. The following weekend, Wofford dropped a pair of games to Dayton (9-11, 8-10) and swept a doubleheader against Butler (7-2, 14-9). The Terriers played four games last weekend, losing to UNC Asheville (6-16) and Gardner-Webb (3-4 in 15) before sweeping St. Peter's (9-2, 16-6).
Wofford ranks sixth in the SoCon with a team batting average of .295 (122-for-413), seventh with a team ERA of 5.52 (65 ER in 106 IP) and eighth with a fielding percentage of .959.
Individually, David Roney ranks second in the league with a .444 average (11-for-25), and Mac Doyle is second with seven doubles. Doyle leads the SoCon with 39 total bases and ranks second with five home runs.

The Wildcats are among league leaders in all three team categories, ranking first in batting average, third in ERA and fourth in fielding. Davidson leads the league with a team batting average of .329 (149-for-453), ranking second with 20 doubles, third with five triples, first with 22 stolen bases and third with 68 walks. The Wildcat pitching staff ranks third with a team ERA of 4.30 (50 ER in 115 IP), and defensively, the Wildcats are fourth with a fielding percentage of .968.
Individually, Davidson has a pair of hitters ranked in batting average, with freshman third baseman Andrew Barna (.415, 22-for-53) and junior first baseman Danny Weiss (.415, 17-for-41) in a four-way tie for 10th. Along with Barna, sophomore center fielder Drew Gadaire and junior left fielder Sam Payne have a league-best 22 hits, and Gadaire also is tops in the SoCon with 20 runs scored and nine stolen bases. With 17 RBI, Payne is tied for second in the league, and Barna ranks third with six doubles. The pair also rank among league leaders in total bases, fourth (32) and third (33), respectively.
Junior relief pitcher Mike Frongello leads the league with a 1.02 ERA, and Middour is ranked second in strikeouts with 23 in 20 innings.
