LEWISBURG, Pa. — Bucknell's Paige Cobb hit a free-position shot with one second left in regulation to send the Bison to an 8-7 win as they spoiled Davidson's season opener on Sunday afternoon in women's lacrosse at Graham Field.
The Wildcats saw a three-goal lead (7-4) in the second half disappear after the Bison netted goals in the 17th, 15th and sixth minutes to set up the game-winner by Cobb. The midfielder was fouled by Stella Davis (Phoenix, Md.) with just one second on the clock, and converted on the Bison's fourth and final free-position shot.
Cobb tied things up for Bucknell (1-1) with a free-position shot goal at the 6:52 mark. She was one of three players to score a pair of goals on the afternoon, joining Michelle Milot and Julia Braun.
Davidson was led by the duo of freshman Alanna Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) and sophomore Erin Keitel (Carlsbad, Calif.) with two goals each. Parker added the lone assist for the Wildcats for a team-high three points.
Jen Crawford (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), Haley Cook (Darien, Conn.) and Anna Smith (Newburyport, Mass.) each chipped in single goals.
The Wildcats had an excellent first half as they jumped out to a 5-2 lead after 30 minutes of play. Parker led a charge back from a 2-1 deficit in the early stages, with both of her goals coming in the half. Her first score tied the game at 2-all and then later, she moved the score to 4-2 in favor of the 'Cats with her second goal.
Keitel, who missed all but two games last year due to a season-ending injury, closed out the half with her sixth career goal for a 5-2 lead.
Cook pushed the Davidson lead out to 6-2 and Keitel scored her last goal of the game with 22 minutes left that gave the Wildcats a 7-4 lead, before Bucknell went on a 4-0 run to finish out the game.
Goalkeeper Michelle Pav (Golden, Colo.) was credited with nine saves in the loss for Davidson, while Alyssa DeLorenz came up with 15 saves for Bucknell.
Davidson tallied a two-shot advantage, 25-23, and had a game-high 16 groundballs. Erin McGuire (Bishopville, Md.) and Taylor Ketcham (Hampstead, N.C.) registered four and three groundballs, respectively. Ketcham also caused a team-best three turnovers.
The Wildcats will next play its home-opener vs. Detroit Mercy on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 6 p.m. The game will also be their first league game as they begin their first season in the newly formed National Lacrosse Conference.
