BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Davidson senior Carl Sandercock extended his win-by-fall streak to three with a pair of pins as the Wildcats defeated Campbell, 23-21, but fell to N.C. State, 35-16, in non-conference wrestling action Tuesday night in the John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center.
Davidson (5-15) extended its winning streak to three in taking its fifth-straight match over Campbell (1-12). The 'Cats held a 10-point lead after sophomore Tyler Mullen scored a 10-2 major decision at 165 pounds, but saw the Camels take a 21-17 lead after dropping the 174-, 184- and 197-pound bouts via two major decisions and a fall. Campbell was unable to field a heavyweight wrestler though, spotting Davidson six points and the win.
In the second dual match, N.C. State (7-14) swept the final six matches to erase the Wildcats' 16-3 advantage. The 'Cats built the lead with back-to-back pins by junior Vitaly Radsky (141 pounds) and Sandercock (149). Brett Farina (157 pounds), Quinton Godley (174), Christian McLean (197) and Eloheim Palma (285) all recorded pins for N.C. State.
Both Radsky brothers went undefeated, extending their respective winning streaks and improving their career-best season records.
Vitaly Radsky also scored a 13-3 major decision over Kelin Bidelspach to improve his overall record to 19-6 and his dual record to 14-2. He has now won eight straight and 13 of his last 15 bouts.
Alex Radsky (133 pounds) scored a 9-3 decision over Richie Apolinar (Campbell) and a 16-5 major decision over Dale Shull to improve to 14-4 for the year, 11-4 in duals. He extended his winning streak to seven and has now won 12 of his last 13.
Sandercock felled Campbell's Billy Heemer in three minutes, 54 seconds and N.C. State's Robert Mills in 3:16. His three consecutive pins equal his 2008-09 season total. The Quincy, Ill. native had dropped his first 10 bouts this season.
Sandercock and fellow seniors Ben Altman, Ben Thompson and Mark Jeevratnam will be honored prior to their final regular season home match on Thursday versus Duquesne. The match, set for 7 p.m. in Belk Arena, will be the final tune-up before the 'Cats host the Southern Conference Wrestling Championship on Saturday, Mar. 6.
