Davidson Wrestling Rally Falls Short Against Duquesne

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior Ben Altman's pin at 125 pounds put Davidson in position to complete a 21-point comeback in their regular season finale, but Duquesne hung on for a 27-16 win in non-conference wrestling action Thursday night in Belk Arena.

Duquesne (4-5) won five of the first six bouts and took a 24-3 lead after competition started at 149 pounds, but the Wildcats (5-16) won three of the last four to narrow the gap. Junior Charlie Wolff's decision at 285 pounds put the 'Cats on track to tie with three consecutive pins. Altman, wrestling in his final regular season match at Davidson, came through by pinning Taylor Wilde in 3:14 but Duquesne's Jake Swink survived two near falls at 133 pounds, surrendering a major decision to junior Alex Radsky, to ice the win.

Josh Pascazi opened the contest with a technical fall at 149 pounds and a 7-2 decision in Alex Martinez's favor to give Duquesne an early 8-0 lead. Sophomore Tyler Mullen then electrified the Davidson fans with an inspired performance at 165 pounds. Mullen slammed Nathan Reinhart to mat in the first few seconds of the bout with a takedown and stayed aggressive throughout. Reinhart managed to get a reversal in the second frame, but Mullen escaped and lifted Reinhart for another big takedown in the waning seconds of the second. A solid third period performance gave Mullen an 8-5 decision.

Duquesne added to their lead though, scoring a major decision at 174 pounds before Ryan Sula and Justin Buchanan scored pins at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively.

Wolff stopped Duquesne's momentum though with a 3-0 decision over Nadeem Farah at 285 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Wolff escaped in the second for a one-point lead and nearly lifted Farah for a takedown, but he ran out of time. The technique would prove useful though in the third frame as Farah chose bottom to start. Farah twice got to his feet, but Wolff was able to lift him and slam him back to the mat to maintain control. A point for stalling and the riding time bonus gave Wolff his second and third points for the win.

Altman scored three near falls in the first frame at 125 before pinning Wilde 14 seconds into the second period with a reversal. The pin was his fifth of the season.

Alex Radsky extended his winning streak to eight matches with his 16-2 major decision. He has now won 13 of his last 14 and is 15-4 for the year.

Vitaly Radsky saw his eight-match winning streak get snapped after narrowly getting edged by Tony Lascari in a close 5-4 decision. Radsky was down 4-1 going into the third and scored a takedown, but Lascari was able to get free for a 5-3 lead. Radsky received a point for Lascari's second stall warning and nearly took him down in the final seconds for the tie, but he did not gain enough control before the buzzer sounded.

Davidson will host the 73rd annual Southern Conference Wrestling Championship in Baker Sports Complex on Saturday, Mar. 6. Ticket information is available here. The preliminary rounds are set to start at 11 a.m., while the finals are set for 7 p.m.
